Peggy Noonan wrote a good op ed on this subject prior to the election, and I'll post it here later. It boiled down to a criticism of how the Democrats (the party, not the citizens) have been obsessed with attaining power at the expense of a real platform. Obama managed to harness that with the ACA, but beyond that Democrats don't really have much going for them in terms of policy. They jump from one minority to the next, trying to stir them up and promise rights or welfare of some sort, and then blame republicans when it doesn't work. So from here, the Left really needs to redefine American liberalism more than just refuting Trump's platform.

Here, Labour had a leader resign, a party leadership vote, a civil war, another party leadership vote (with the same result) and a complete reshuffle of the shadow cabinet, whilst the Lib Dems seemed to have teetered off onto non existence and UKIP rests comfortably in its grave.

If I had to make an educated guess, we're going to go through a repeat of the counter culture movement in the late twentieth century. The right (and alt-right) will grow more powerful and embeded in the establishment until it becomes impossible for anyone to say that they're anti-establishment reactionaries. Around that point, the left will coalesce around opposition to the 'new normal' and start to base their identity off of opposition to everything the alt-right represents. If they're successful then they'll find historical precedents to reformulate their new identity, so that they can say "we're not just reacting to the establishment, we have our own morals and ideals that we're fighting for"

Whether or not they go all the way to becoming the hegemony again really depends on how both sides react to one another.

Maybe you didn't see Cindy's posts from a few months back, but I'll reiterate what I've said before twice in another thread on Septagon a few months back. This place is not a SJW-haven or /pol/ lite. If this was /pol/ lite we wouldn't have people like Turkey, Icy, Flee, or Verbatim posting opinions that are objectively not /pol/. Cindy is just butt hurt that we're not the former either, and therefore this place has to be "/pol/ lite".
