So where does the left go now in American politics and politics in general?

I think it's safe to assume that although the breakdown of the left wasn't the only component to the Brexump, it certainly played a large role in the shy conservative/Trump phenomenon we've been seeing in the west recently.

What happens now? Do regressives gain even more traction, or will tolerant liberalism make a comeback in 2020?

Democrats are pretty much where the Republicans were in 2008 - no party leader, an aging Congressional delegation, and no Congressional majority. Problem is, Democrats are also decimated at the state level, which is a long term issue.

I imagine we'll see the party tilt further left, with the strong chance of a Warren/Sanders type of Democrat getting a role in the party leadership. After that, it's really just a slow slog of trying to find solid and viable candidates.

This. Expect to see a rise in populism with people like Warren taking the helm. Sanders message should be a wake up call to Democrats, and this election more or less ousted the Clintonomics era of Democrats to an end.

Thank god.

If Elizabeth Warren does not become the first female President in 2020, Trump will win a second term and the Democratic party will be functionally destroyed.

Screencap this.
It's already destroyed because they supported Clinton and they've lost on even the lower levels. They already know the formula to success.

Depends where you want the party to go.

"Dean was the chairman from 2004-2009. During the 2006 and 2008 elections cycles, Democrats gained 52 House seats, 14 Senate seats, 7 governorships and the White House in 2008. During his DNC tenure, Dean focused on a fifty-state strategy and to build up the party even in more Republican strongholds."

I'm not sure I support him as Chairman, because he is still an aging guy who would be out of touch with the liberal wing, but the guy knows how to organize in the states, and can do it well. He should have some semblance of power

I thought you were gonna stop posting. Don't post this elitist bitch to further your points. It's ironic you link her when she takes away her likes and dislikes, and shuts down the comments section because she knows the type of feedback she will get.

Sorry, but shutting down people who disagree with you is much more retarded. She's the Trump of the left.

While lurking, I had a lot of things I wanted to post--so I should've saved the first thing I posted for last. I was getting pretty close to finished, actually.

But, if people like you are going to exploit that statement as a way of getting me to shut up, I guess I'll take it right back.

american liberals will use scapegoats like third party voters and abstaining voters to deny the fact that their candidate was awful, they wont move any further left because that would endanger their bottom line. will probably try to pander to some of the more "reasonable" republican voters. we'll know more about how the party changes its platform/overall approach as we edge closer to the next midterms.

I've given my point.

Obviously the Democratic Party isn't going to become the new Green Party. But we can likely expect a shift to the left of Clinton and Obama in terms of policy.

Maybe the people will, but the people in charge? I think they'll do a lot of self reflecting and "what if?" moments, and see they have their own civil war. Because if they keep up this elitist people at the top dictating how things go, how people are chosen, when to do debates to shut someone up, and to promote a clearly corrupt person, they're going to lose the very people supporting them.

They have two years to reflect. 4 if you don't count the mid-terms. If people like Warren and her ideals don't come to the top, and help influence the new Democratic party (who I believe WILL be more left, and more populist), then they're finished.

I said it because it seems you're being rather emotional again and posting rather angry. It came off a little cold. What I meant was basically, do yourself a favor and take a breather, and get away from all the cancerous political shit that has been the headlines in your life for a year now.

We should all do as much.

Yeah, agreed.

This works a lot better than "move on" or "get over it" or "just accept it," by the way.

Good. Play some Dark Souls, get yourself something good to drink or eat. Relax and at least be happy that this shit is finally over, at least for 4 years.

1) Scapegoating isn't something indigenous to the left. It's indigenous to the losing side. Conservatives did it to the last two elections.

2) The left will always be a part of the American political discourse. Remember, before Obama was 8 years of W. Most of which was during a Republican super majority. The pendulum swung the other way and Democrats had one of their own.

3) Trump isn't a party line Republican. He's quite different. I would argue he isn't a traditional conservative. He doesn't really follow the guns, God and gays line neocons do.

So, the question doesn't really apply.

Now, it's the tone of your OP that I asked why is this in Serious. It's a fair question, I guess. But the tone isn't really that serious. It's more troll-snark

One conflict right now is whether to put Howard Dean or Keith Ellison as DNC chair.

If Ellison doesn't become chair, it'll show that the Democrats have learned NOTHING from this election:

YouTube

By comparison, putting Dean, an establishment guy and former lobbyist, in charge would be laughable and awful.

Depends where you want the party to go.

"Dean was the chairman from 2004-2009. During the 2006 and 2008 elections cycles, Democrats gained 52 House seats, 14 Senate seats, 7 governorships and the White House in 2008. Dean must lose if Dems want to win, I say. See above.

The fuck? It's a legitimate question, and no snarkiness was ever intended. The left and the Democrats have imploded in on themselves the past couple years and the electorate has reflected that in their voting behaviour. That's not a troll remark. That's just a fact.

Valid criticisms and questions do not necessarily translate into condescension just because you identify with the politics that are receiving such criticism.
