The proposed regulations appear to have pretty grave consequences for the future of fair-use content creation or even just the sharing of information.

A campaign has been established to push back against this, but apparently there's only one month before they vote on it.

I think I'm understanding you perfectly. :p The reason the site has blocked European users has nothing do with the current or upcoming copyrighted content rules this thread is about.

I don't think they banned Europeans for the looming copyright rules. When I say they haven't voted on it yet, I'm wondering what reason they have to ban people from Europe because there doesn't seem to be any good one so It looks pretty fucked to me. tbh if I thought they did it because of the new proposed regulations I would say it sucks but it's understandable.

I need to clarify my thoughts better in the future it looks like. . .

Yeah, that comment was unclear and ambiguous as best. When Class says there's already a consequence of the copyright bill and you follow it up with "that's fucked, the regulation isn't even into effect yet", I think almost everyone would interpret that as you both assuming the same thing.

but why? The GDPR is about companies being forced to deal with user info better, right? Otherwise they get fined? Does that mean that Epicmafia just don't wanna play ball?

I doubt it'll affect your content dramatically even if it were passed, but there's the Brussels Effect; When every other country has to adhere to EU laws to reach and market to that audience, rather than having two separate laws regarding the matter (EU and US, or Asia), most companies just swap all of their policies over to that one because it's a lot easier following one set of laws than two.

For example, you might've gotten some emails about changing their privacy policy in regards to GDPR, which is only technically in force in the EU, American news outlets practice it too because otherwise they lose their audience (and profits) in Europe.
