This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
So, the baby's about two weeks old now. Lovely little thing. . . I imagine, I haven't met it. As many of you already know I've had problems with this neighbour before (our houses are literally attached) and I can hear her at pretty much all hours of the day screaming and swearing and hollering at the top of her voice at her daughters.

Well, it was bad enough while she was pregnant, and after the baby was born the daughters went to their grandma's for two weeks. Now, however, they're back and it's just as bad as ever. It can't be healthy for the baby.

Why do I have the sense that loud speaking is inherently a European trait? I have plenty of family members from Spain and all of my grandmother's friends, who are Spanish, all sound like they're yelling at each other

No, she isn't speaking loudly.

She isn't loudly telling her daughters she'll bash their heads in if she has to exit the "fucking shower".

She's shouting at them, with all the emotional connotations that entails.
