Taking a simple 100 level course has gave me more knowledge than like 80% of officers on the streets, meaning I know more about the law and pose a less litigation risk for the department. On top of that, pay is like an extra $5k a year with a degree

Adjusting for inflation is fine, especially if they're allowing a fairly long time to start paying it back. To put it in perspective, my student loans started accruing interest the day I took them out.
