Should A.I.'s be treated as living beings?

Hi Five!
I am a little tipsy at the moment so please forgive this horrid post block I'm about to make

we already have information--why do we need to give information a brain
So it can be processed, of course.

Humanity's problems stem from a deficit in collating and processing information.
well, you can't make a ball bounce higher than it falls

besides, i don't really know how you define "processed" information
what does it mean for information to be "processed", and why do you need sentience to do that

do you mean problem solving? learning?
i don't think that's a function of sentience--and in some ways, are we not already there?
I don't think that ball metaphor really works in this situation. I mean hell you can easily make a ball bounce higher than it falls by adding more force to its descent. You're getting at the  idea of problem solving being sentience, which I agree its not, that is Reason. But I think sentience helps when dealing with the issue, the ability to emphasize and feel drives a lot of decisions, often for the better.

Oh yes, and this. By this set of logic, all children are man or woman made creations since they were technically engineered biologically.
i think the fact that they're "engineered" biologically, as a biological function, proves the opposite

we don't make babies--our gametes do
We wouldn't be making the AI after a certain point, they'd be building themselves. And there's no saying that we won't eventually be able to understand our DNA and genetic makeup enough to create designer babies and alter shit. But anyway my point is we won't understand the creation of AI any more than we do ourselves. We aren't anything apart from a very complex computer we don't understand, AI wouldn't be all that different. I think at some point AI would be machinery that mimics biology so perfect you couldn't tell them apart.

Ignoring for a moment the fact that it would be unethical as hell.
Is this along the same lines of how you think it's unethical to reproduce? (Not that I disagree)
yeah

in my opinion, AI should only be used for protocol
they should efficiently perform a given set of tasks

without question, without fear of pain, and without loss of energy

sentience adds nothing but nonsense
emotions and another tripe that would just get in the way
My problem with this is the same from the first quote I have. Reason without Sentience just seems like a bad idea, if we're going to have AI it needs to be able to think on a human level to avoid any problems. If sentience is done right it can be ten times better than pure reason. A AI with sentience would be able to sympathize with humanity and wouldn't be as likely to abuse us, sure some might decided they're offended by us but that's nothing worse than Humanity has done to itself in the past. And in the end our Sentience drives us into doing the right thing.

I don't think that will be up to us to decide. Itl be more of a question whether they decide we are worth keeping around as pets.

A.I. who are able to learn, reason, and have emotion (i.e. are sentient) should be treated equal to humans. if they're capable of achieving the same amount or more than humans, it would be foolish to try to stifle that growth.

A.I. who are not sentient -- perhaps they can learn, but they can't understand emotion or grow in that way -- should be treated as tools, because that is all they will ever be useful for. such A.I. wouldn't progress past being efficient at their duties.
