He had earned a reputation as an economic reformer while governor of one of Russia's biggest cities, Nizhny Novgorod.

Falling out of favour with Yeltsin's successor, Mr Putin, he became an outspoken opposition politician.

He was shot right in front of the Kremlin too, and 2 days before a rare protest to oppose Putin and what he's doing.

My thoughts? I think it was Putin's men who honestly did this. Someone with a history of getting rid of political opponents, as well as him dying 2 days before the rally? I doubt this is coincidence. I just hope he becomes a martyr now and they protest against this wanna be Czar.

As someone who has lived there, there's no "almost" about it. The police are little more than than a group of muggers supported by the state. It's just the way things are done there.
