What's your opinion on it?

I personally think children should be taught the basis of the major religions and how they play into today's world, as well as provide some background history for culture. Other than that, I think it should stay out of core classes. People can choose to take a religion course if they so desire.

world religion is important to general education, so long as it is covered in an as close to an unbiased way as possible. It doesn't belong in the science class, ever.

I had a classmate who didn't know that there were other religions besides Christianity. She also found out that I was Atheist *fedora tipping intensifies* and was convinced I was an agent of Satan sent to Earth to corrupt people.

Honestly, I wonder what the fuck her parents taught her.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
It has no place in the classroom.
I'd say that scripture belongs in history classes when it's relevant to understanding a culture at the time.

My high school world history class never had any mention of religion.

I'm not advocating educators pretend religion isn't a thing, but it must be viewed externally, apathetically and only in how it applies to historical events and cultures. Shit like my middle school teachers would pull, saying "Here's what the curriculum says, now here's what I believe" is not acceptable. Scripture should not be taught in a school setting either.

If you're not careful, you WILL see shit like teachers telling their students the founding fathers wanted to build a "christian nation" or that democracy has its roots in Moses.

There's no problem with talking about religion in a religious history class, or outlining the basic tenets of a religion in a history class as part of the foundation of a unit.

Teaching the Bible in class is a no go. End.

Science isn't mandated to be taught in churches/etc.
Religion should stay out of schools except in relevant history chapters. Otherwise you open the door for scientology classes. There are already places for religion to be taught, and it shouldn't be promoted by the state.

Usually when you have religious conservatives demanding religion in science classes its easy to dissuade them by bringing up islam.

It has its place in history courses.  It helps explain some of the motivating factors behind certain cultures and military campaigns.

Hmm...
It plays a part in history, so it should stay there or in a specialized class for world religions. Mythology definitely shouldn't be included in a science class, though.

1000 years from now, historians will point out major religions that caused the suffering of mankind and will teach us how to think for ourselves.

*cough*

Keep it in a History class or a separate non-major class.

It helps prevent stupid shit like THIS.

There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
Love life; but take nothing too seriously.
I definitely think people should learn about the various religions of the world and how they play into different cultures and the modern world. Perhaps make it a branch of world history.

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are
It has no place in the classroom.
Agreed

Almost always, with moderation
In a history class sure, outside of that, it should be given much if any attention nor influence.

Actually had my highschool agriculture teacher explain why various domesticated animals came about because "god decided they should be like this".

She's gone now, but that sent up a couple red flags back when I was in highschool.
