Unlike Americans, Brits think taxation is a moral duty

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
YouGov
Quote
Compared to the United States, people in Britain enjoy a far wider range of public services. For example, here the NHS covers the entire country but in America 41 million people are uninsured and live without regular healthcare. The welfare state isn't cheap, however, and people in Britain pay for it. In the United States the tax burden is 25.1% of GDP, but in Britain taxes consume 35.5% of the total economy.

The latest research from YouGov shows that most Americans (53%) say that your right to keep the money you earn is a stronger moral argument than a duty to contribute towards public services, something only 37% of Americans feel is the stronger moral issue. The situation is reversed in Britain, where 63% of people say that your duty to contribute is a stronger moral argument than your right to keep the money you earn.

Attitudes differ so significantly between the US and the UK that the responses of Democrats in the US are largely the same as the responses of right-wing, Conservative Party voters in the UK. 56% of Democrats and 55% of Conservatives say that the duty to contribute to public services is the stronger moral argument. This compares to 71% of left-wing Labour voters in the UK, and only 24% of Republicans in the US.

Really highlights the historic cultural disparities.

And I prefer the American way. In more depth, I think you should only have to pay on what you consume and instead of taxes, you get a bill telling how much you owe; much like how a person that doesn't use much water gets a cheaper water bill than somebody else

Of course, some things will be base lined as roads and military, since everybody relies on those

I can accept taxation as a form of contract between an individual and the government, exchanging money for services and benefits from the government.

It should be consent-based, however.

Taxation without offering a choice is theft.

Rockets on my X
Honestly, I don't mind taxes too much. I mean, on paper, they sound lovely. Whatever you make, you take a portion of it and give it to the government, so they can sort out all the higher problems and fix stuff that you, one singular person, might not be able to do on your own.

Except that's not so.

And, in some sense, it seems a little bit silly.

Couple years ago, I worked a construction job. I was building a bank. And, it sort of struck me as stupid. I was busting my ass to build a bank. And every paycheck I made, every two weeks, was 1200 dollars. At the end of the day I got 800 when taxes went through.

And yet, I was sitting there, doing physical, shitty, labor, to help a service, and I was paying for it. Not only that, but there's the problem of retarded budgets.

All the money that gets sucked in through taxes basically just falls into a black hole. Like fucking hell if I know where it went.

Because it sure as fuck hasn't gone to my province's degrading roads. Hasn't gone to the town's faulty equipment and breaking down shit. Hasn't gone to the school that was built in the 1930s. Hasn't gone for the medical clinic, which moved into one of the older schools in the area because they didn't have enough room.

On paper, the idea of taxes are quite pretty. In form and function, they're abused, faulty, and to a guy who slogs through the mud on a regular basis, they don't make any logical sense.

In conclusion, that's why everything I do is under the table. I pay, nothing. But in the end, whatever I earn is spent anyway, sent out to the world where it will eventually trade hands and fall into the black hole that is the tax collection agency.

Provided that the money is going to useful things I really don't see a problem with taxes.

If we could choose to pay taxes, nobody would and nothing would ever get funding.

I'm really interested to know how many of the people in here, regardless of opinion, are tax-paying adults with a full-time profession.

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are

Minecraft seems more communist. Well I guess it depends on the server.

This.  The past few years, our County Police and public library have seen a massive cut in funds due to the commissioners being complete incompetent asshats.  The taxpayers continue to scream about how much we need the police and library, but when it comes to having to pay for it they fucking flat-out refuse.

People want things, but refuse to pay for them.  Then it bites them in the ass later on.  Funny how that works.

emigrate or degenerate. the choice is yours
I don't necessarily view it as a "moral obligation" but it's definitely something that is required for the basic functioning of society.

Saying that, I don't pay taxes, so I'm speaking from inexperience here.

I'm of the belief that taxation is theft.  That said, it is necessary for there to be a government.

In Anarchyville, roads would come from community cooperatives.  In AnCapistan they'd come from corporate investments, paid for over time via tolls.

I'd make the argument that Minecraft is the epitome of Capitalism. I don't know many of Minecraft communities where everyone lives together in pure Communism. Everybody has their own private hoard.

Think about it: You spawn into a new world and it's your job to adapt and exploit it.
Dude has a point.
