This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Studies have been done on rats--and on terminally ill human patients, if memory serves--which shows a sharp spike in neurological activity seconds prior to death which is experientially similar to regular religious experiences and the effects of psilocybin--the key ingredient of magic mushrooms.

It has nothing to do with the truthfulness of religious claims, and nothing to do with some sort of exogenous variable like cerebral hypoxia or anaesthetics; we're essentially programmed to have these sorts of experiences.

I think it may be based on what you were taught growing up.  In private school, we read a book called The Message where the author describes events following a snowmobile accident that even the most religious in our class called bullshit on.

Basically the guy claimed he went to heaven whenever he was knocked back into his coma and saw all his friends and family.  He then saw Jesus, Moses, Benny Frank, and a couple other Founding Fathers who all told him that the United States was going to be the New Jerusalem soon and he was supposed to send the Message to God's faithful.

It just reeked of religious upbringing and egotistical self-righteousness.

Also, a kid recently came out and said his claims of going to heaven following a car accident (the claims were then published and made his family a lot of money) and said he made up his claims just for attention.

Well there was a book, "Heaven is for Real" (not to be confused with the movie God's Not Dead"). IIRC there was apparently something about the kid not even having been unconscious during the ordeal. Basically, the dad pulled it out of his ass.

Colton Burpo was his name.

Biggest load of utter shit I've ever laid witness to.

But he was in Heaven and met God how can you doubt that?
