Yeah, this is only the beginning. Stihl is a HUGE employer where I live and they've commented on how terrible education here is compared to Germany, same with BMW and they had to give like $3M to a S.C college so they can train new employees to be competent to work in their factory

If I ever have kids then they're going to be sent to private school or be home-schooled

I am glad I am no longer in school. I have honestly learned much more after graduating than I ever did in school.
Not only that, but I've learned more in a few weeks of college than 12 years in public schooling. Being made to work and holding a person responsible is the direction that needs to be taken, not this B.S where grades are replaced with things like "satisfactory and unsatisfactory". Education has turned into babying and shielding when reality is that you will be expected to complete a task or be in serious trouble

I don't see what this is supposed to teach.
And that's the point. It's supposed to replace simple subtraction. But in the real world, you're going to do traditional subtraction over this shit

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.
You guys never used number lines in school?
Are you saying you actually understand what's in the OP?

I don't see what's so difficult. Jack forgot another "10" to subtract somewhere along the line.

The answer is 111. Jack got 121. Seems pretty obvious.

number lines are a retarded, impractical method of learning subtraction for all the special snowflakes who ate glue back in kindergarten, it's never used in the real world and never should be used.

Well, obviously. But let's not pretend that number lines are anything new, nor are they used in anything above 3rd grade math. It's not like we're teaching kids algebra with number lines and shit.

The most troubling thing is that the parent with a BSc admits to not being able to get the correct answer using the number line.

Impractical or not, that's unnerving.

the farthest number lines should be used is kindergarten, that's the issue. By that point you should be able to grasp the concept of subtraction and addition and be able to scale up without the usage of a number line. Once you pass basic subtraction of 20-5 and the like, numberlines have no place in education.

it's not unnerving that a retarded method of doing basic subtraction is forgotten, and replaced by efficient means. it's simply proof that the method is retarded.

I just picked 3rd grade for an example. I have no idea when they're used until. US math education is FAR FAR behind where it should be.

edit: woops. Didn't look who I was replying to.

That's because the correct answer isn't on the number line. It clearly states that Jack got the answer wrong, so the wrong answer is displayed on the number line.

That's what's unnerving.

Either the parent is admitting they can't see there's a fault in the number line, or they can but just don't know what it is.

I have a feeling that they taught multiple ways to subtract, and this was just one of them. If this helps even a few kids in the class grasp what it is that they're learning, then it's worth it.

Well, CommonCore is a liberal policy. Why would a liberal source link to something that goes against the policies of politicians they support?

Just because it's supported by liberals [and a number of conservatives, mind you] doesn't mean it's some attack by liberals to try to inject the public school system with their positions.

I'd love to see what conservatives would propose we do to reform schools, but they haven't proposed fuck-all.

Well, Kinder is a conservative user. Why wouldn't a conservative user find sources to go against the policies of the politicians he opposes?

I think so, but that wasn't the focus and was only used as an alternative to simple 9-3=6 subtraction. Now schools are placing these CommonCore concepts ahead of 6+3=9 and 5*2-4=6

The normal arithmetic is still being taught in schools. Even in liberally hippy-land California. I would know.

I don't know what CC replacement concepts you're talking about.
