we need a stronger intelligence division

honestly we should already have undercover agents in ISIS, the Kremlin, China, etc

it's a failure of the government that we don't - instead of pouring all this funding into fighter jets, we need a way to know more about our enemies

This doesn't excuse the extreme overconfidence displayed at the start of the siege, especially when you look at losses. Some of the Iraqi army's best units have been devastated, and often for really stupid reasons. The Golden Division got really fucked up because they were poorly utilized. The whole operation reeks of incompetence on the part of the US and the Iraqis.

I think it was more the US (Obama Administration) wanted it done quickly so he could make a mark and claim he helped knock out ISIS before he left. But you're probably right.

Assad's forces probably won't get anywhere close to Raqqa for another 1-2 years, why do you want to give ISIS the benefit of operating freely?

Mosul was never under siege and frankly with 750k-1mil civilians remaining and limited use of airstrikes there is no other way to liberate a city of 2+ million.

For every dollar spent spying on law abiding citizens, at least ten are spent spying abroad. Remember when that scandal about us spying on Germany's and most of the EU's official emails broke a few years back?

And US doctrine is based upon the fast acquisition of, and ability to hold and maintain air superiority. Why wouldn't we funnel more funding in to fighter programs? (my personal thoughts about the f35 failure aside)

It kind of is. Why put troops on the ground. Also they need a strong ally that is not expansionist over there to keep breathing down both nations throat. Basically creating a counter balance for both Iraq and Syria.

ISIS is dead. The only discussion at the moment is how long until the last outpost falls. And who gets the territory.

I tend to agree, but an argument against relying on regional allies is that they tend to be fucking incompetent and often corrupt.
