In my opinion the two greatest men in history when it comes to foreign policy but which do you think was better? I personally think Kennan edges out Kissinger by just a bit.

As one of those alleged communists, I take offense to think you can defeat us.

Hmmmmm I'll try and sum it up as short as possible, this'll be tough.

George Kennan - Ambassador to the Soviet Union that made the policy of containment which was quite possibly the single smartest foreign policy in US history. It allowed us to effectively and efficiently take out the Soviet Union.

Henry Kissinger - Nixon's Secretary of State and a damn fine one. He made the policies to get us out of Vietnam, strengthen ties with China, and significantly weaken the Soviet Union.

Yes we're all aware that the Soviet Union would have failed eventually but due to the US's efforts it shortened that time.

Not really, the U.S. was ridiculously militant during the Cold War.

It wasn't so much battling the monolithic communist enemy as it was waiting for it to wither and die, needlessly killing hundreds of thousands of drafted American kids in the meantime.

This is coming from a guy who supported action in Kosovo and Iraq.

But that's exactly what the Policy of Containment did. Had we allowed the Soviet Union to expand that would have allowed them to survive longer. Communism has to grow to survive.

I don't disagree with containment, per se, but the way we looked at the whole issue was wrong. Communism, at least in countries like Viet Nam, was actually Nationalism in disguise but we failed to see that with our Red Detecting Goggles on.

I'll completely agree with that.
