ITT: People getting upset that the military has incentives to keep morale up and people happy to work

Except we don't know if general personnel can use it, or the officers.

OT: Obama likely had  no knowledge of this until he was actually on the course. SS handles this, and they likely chose the military course as it's already well protected and cheaper for security.

ITT: People getting upset over something he likely had no knowledge of.
Well the golf course at the Navy base somewhat close to me is open for all active duty and retired military. There's also a Marine base that has a gun range. These type of facilities are an unwritten necessity. Just imagine if you had to live on a government base for a few years or were in the military in general, you would want forms of entertainment

Well, that's great and all - but not all military bases with these amenities are like that.

They might not be able to afford it, given the state of military wages.

It might not have the same psychological impact, not being supplied by the military itself.

It might not be a good idea to have a bunch of marines "off-site" and roaming around whenever they wanted to have a good time and blow off steam.

A whole host of reasons.

Biggest thing is money

For those who just get in, money can be very tight, especially if trying to raise a family. Amenities such as movie theaters, bowling alleys, gyms, swimming pools, etc can either be free or cost less on base than off

It's also just the perks of signing up and having to be deployed, move many times, and be away from your family for months at a time. Yeah sure, they signed up on their own behalf but it's still something to show some gratitude. All of this dwarfs in comparison to the true wasting when it comes to purchasing new tanks that have no use or buying fighter jets that will never see combat

So...do what the rest of us do? Don't do stuff you can't afford.

Boo hoo.

Maybe if they had fewer golf courses, they could pay military members more money.

What a stupidly capricious and facile thing to say. The morale and mental fortitude of our military is, quite literally, a matter of national security.

The idea that if we spent less on recreation we could raise wages is equally facile; soldiers are fucking expensive as it is. It's probably cheaper to build them their own collective golf courses than individually pay them enough so they can afford 18 holes.

How much is it to play golf on base, anyway?

It's funny, because these are exactly the arguments that the more conservative crowd tells poor people.

Are you fucking serious?

Premise One - Recreation and psychological health are important to the military's integrity.
Premise Two - It's more expensive to raise the wages of soldiers than to provide our own recreational facilities.

Conclusion - We should provide our own recreational facilities.
Spoiler
And, like we've said, we're not even sure if this is totally free for the soldiers.

Trying to say "Lol, the conservatives are only supporting this because they're jingoistic flag-fuckers; they turn around and say what I'm saying to the poor" is a false equivocation of unbelievable proportions.

It's pretty true, though. American conservatives, in particular, are all gung-ho for whatever the military wants, but fuck those poor-ass, liberal, welfare queens who also don't make much money.

Something something bootstraps.

Can you not see why that is, though?

Marines quite clearly have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps. American conservatives are all for this because the military works hard; it's remuneration for labour, not welfare.

Of course, golfing is open to all personnel and does in fact cost money. This is a remarkably petty complaint.

The rest of us have a less stressful work environment, more working rights, better vacation, time at home, and a better place to call home. You work a 8 hour job and live in a decent neighborhood, correct? Well the job for military can be 24 hours (if on duty) or doesn't end at 5pm; Hell, you're basically on the clock 24/7 if you're out on deployment. And don't forgot base housing is pretty bad, especially since you're required to live on base for the first year or so you join up

The rest of us have great lives when compared to the military and while money is a huge factor, another and probably an even bigger is morale and the ability to keep these people in service for at least 20 years. The military is the nation's BIGGEST investment and to get the biggest bang for their buck, the government has decided to provide amenities to keep them and military families happy.

Anyways, the AP has reported that the White House apparently didn't know of the wedding being moved until after the fact. Like I said - Secret Service deals with this.

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are

The president had nothing to do with the relocation. The secret service made the call. He was informed of the situation later and telephoned the couple. The call from the president "made their day".
The change in location was to a better spot on the property.
The president had no prior knowledge of the wedding. Invitations like the one sent by this couple are handled by the protocol office. The note back from the protocol office just happened to arrive on the same day.
