It's a bit disturbing how quickly  the story changed. Can you imagine how his family must feel, or how they'll feel if the investigation concludes that it was mechanical?

The evidence against him is that he was calm and conscious at the time of the descent, and the rate of descent would have required manual operation of the controls.

I haven't kept up with this shit. But both sides to the story could be possible. The pilot goes out to take a shit. The black box records heavy breathing, banging on the locked door, and screaming passengers.

Now. Let's say it was a mechanical failure and the plane did a nosedive. The passengers would still be screaming. The pilot would still be trying to get inside.

And here's the key thing. Are any of you aware that planes like that have a separate air system and the cockpits are modulated to the rest of the craft? If there's a breach in the main body of the plane, the door seals, and a separate air supply is routed so the pilots don't pass out even if the entire passenger manifest does.

If it was mechanical, maybe multiple things went wrong. The door sealed when the plane took a nose dive and the co pilot had no choice but to take over.

Either way, I don't know. And frankly, there isn't anything to say here other than

A) 150 people are dead, nothing changes that no matter who or what
B) Another fucking plane went down on a high growing list lately

You're forgetting that the co-pilot engaged the manual lock. That's a key element right there.
Yep. I was listening to a story on NPR about this on my way home from school the other day, and it was mentioned that these planes have 3 locks to make sure that stuff like this doesnt happen and pilots can't lock themselves out accidentally after going to the bathroom, and it seems like the copilot made sure none of the locks would work. that possibility is given credence by the recording of the blackbox, which gave us the copilot's controlled, calm breathing and the screams of the passengers/pilot

He then tried to use the his key code to override the lock, at which point the co-pilot manually engaged the safety lock (which is only supposed to be used in emergencies like hijackers trying to gain access to the cockpit) and started to descend. When the captain realized they were rapidly descending, he tried kicking down the door to still get inside (which was obviously futile, as the doors to cockpits are all bulletproof and extremely sturdy after what happened at 9/11). The final moments of the flight, the passengers realized something was wrong and started screaming.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
But it would have people less worried about the majority of planes being used are over 30 years old when experts say 25 years is the absolute limit and going beyond it is playing with fire.
Maybe, but a structural or control surface failure wouldn't have resulted in such a controlled descent.
Do we have the logbooks for the aircraft? The hobbs time? Tach time? How long since overhaul on the engines? Was there a wing extension or not if they were that close to time out? Was the frame even close to time out? Were there any faults corrected in the last phase? Was there a history of repeating faults in the same system that could have reappeared before the next inspection?
Smaller air charters regularly operate 20 to 40 year old aircraft, provided the structure isn't timed out.

There's a lot that goes on in commercial aviation maintenance, and not just because of laws and government oversight. No mechanic wants to be the one responsible for something like this.
