Oops, I obviously didn't read the article thoroughly, it explains the red coloring, and it's surprisingly not related to iron oxide at all!

"Scientists believe the tholin particles form high in the atmosphere, where ultraviolet sunlight breaks apart and ionizes nitrogen and methane molecules and allows them to react with one another to form more and more complex negatively and positively charged ions. When they recombine, they form very complex macromolecules, a process first found to occur in the upper atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan. The more complex molecules continue to combine and grow until they become small particles; volatile gases condense and coat their surfaces with ice frost before they have time to fall through the atmosphere to the surface, where they add to Pluto’s red coloring."

The tholin falling down is the phenomena seen in the images depicting the blue have around the planet. It's responsible for both the blue coloring, and the red surface. Interesting.

As interesting as NASA's work tends to be, does anyone else question the amount of good it does for us compared to the value we might find in investing in things like bioengineering research? Of course, this might not have been the case in the past, but I wonder if we've extracted most of the direct technological progress from space travel that we can. There are problems that remain to be solved, of course, but I wonder if there aren't more lucrative opportunities we could address now.

It's a planet again.
