A Chapel Hill, North Carolina, man was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of three Muslim college students after an argument about parking, violence that police said they’re investigating as a possible hate crime.Authorities said a long-running dispute in a condominium complex foreshadowed the murders. The father of two of the slain said their Islamic beliefs were the motivation for the killings, the News & Observer of Raleigh reported.Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, was arrested in the shootings of Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, Yusor Abu-Salha, 21, who was his wife of less than two months, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, according to police. Barakat was a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Dentistry. The sisters were students at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) away.Police found the victims dead in their condominium unit after responding to a report of gunshots at 5:11 p.m. Tuesday.“Our preliminary investigation indicates that the crime was motivated by an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking,” police spokesman Joshua Mecimore said in a statement.“We understand the concerns about the possibility that this was hate-motivated and we will exhaust every lead to determine if that is the case,” he said.Crimes motivated by bias or ethnic intimidation can merit harsher punishments, under North Carolina law.
