I cant argue with progress, just you.

My philosophy teacher was always opened minded and never got offend by anything we said. He loved hearing our opinions. Even if our opinion didn't coincide with his, it didn't matter. He always said "everyone has opinions and thoughts, its my job to listen and I love my job"
This is how all philosophy teachers should be.
Agreed. Unfortunately most(?) of them are unlike that.
True. Ive been lucky but some I have meet are too far up their own to see anything but their own shit.

This is, practically verbatim, what my philosophy teacher said today.

I got into a heated debate with her about the Danish cartoonist and I said "my rights don't end where somebody else's feelings begin". She said "why not?" She went on to claim that since the cartoonist knew there'd be controversy and knew it'd cause offence, and intended there to be, he deserved to be legally prosecuted.

We both got really heated and I told her you can have fascism or free speech,  not both. It ended with her saying she's entitled to her opinion and she wouldn't change her mind.

I'm genuinely disgusted and disturbed that a teacher in a liberal,  21st century nation can even begin to entertain the idea that freedom of expression can be limited in such an arbitrary way.

It's bloody disgusting.
You sound pretty stupid, Meta. If this happened to me, I'd end the conversation with the fact that being offended isn't the same for everyone. A non-offensive thing is considered offensive to some. A thumbs up for example, mean stick it up your pooper, and "good job".

Who is the judge that says whether something was intentional or not? Why does she have the power?

Don't attack her argument, question it in some ways that she will attack it for herself, and it will ultimately attack the defense and breach the gate of denial.

If you're at a conflict with something, question it so that you understand fully what she means, and then show your side of the story, and try everything out. Ask every question that's in your head, and bothering you.

Perhaps she might convince you, or alternatively you know every side of her argument, and you can use it against her, but no, be the stupid brat that you are.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.

I like how you're assuming I didn't ask her all of that. When I post a verbatim transcript of the argument, then you can tell me what I did or didn't say.

Regardless, it turns out there isn't much you can say to a person who thinks emotions trump rights and then sits back saying "I've made up my mind and nothing will change it".
