So, I'm at my grandma's house tonight. My grandpa has slept pretty much solidly for the past three days, but other than that he hasn't been odd in any way. Today, however, when my grandma walked across the living room to the cupboard under the stairs my grandpa asked "How did you make your way around there? Did you feel your way around?"

At first I'd thought he'd gone blind, but that was stupid because he was following her with his eyes. When she asked him what she meant, he said she had to be quiet because he was watching out for the kids. My grandma thinks he thought he was back in the Upland's children home where he used to work. She also thinks he'd just woken up; my great grandma, who developed dementia, would do a similar thing where she'd wake up following a dream and just launch into explaining it as if it were fact.

He just isn't making a whole lot of sense really, although I wouldn't go so far as to call him persistently disoriented. My grandma thinks he may have had a stroke, but I doubt it to be honest. I know he has been hallucinating though. I'm doing some Google searches, but it isn't really yielding anything. Anybody have any ideas/personal experience with this sort of thing?

Does he take sleeping medication by any chance? I know that sleeping meds can mess around with people memory wise a little bit. Some people can be a little disorientated after they wake up or have trouble remembering what's what.

The prospect of one day suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's is terrifying to me.

I feel the same way. Losing my life doesn't scare me, losing my mind does.

I see dementia all the time working my job. It presents in different ways - some people are "mildly" demented, where you can see they're a little off but relatively normal-ish, while others are so far gone it's apparent a mile away.

Alzheimers is probably one of the reasons why I smoke.

No, they shouldn't. A mother of two shouldn't have the "right" to kill herself because she feels like it.

Just because you have a child doesn't mean that you should take care of it. It's the right thing to do morally, and society tells you to do so, but for you as an individual, if you have 0 interest, it has 0 purpose. You're thinking about the children's best here, because that's the best for humanity; "children are the future"; and the fact that organisms have children is proof that thinking about having a child that will have a child is what living organisms want.

Once in a while, discrepancies happen, where people don't have these normal needs and interests, and for them, it's normal. For you, taking care of your children is normal, but for them, it's not. Psychopaths can completely neglect children, and just leave them one day when they're bored.

But no, in any other circumstance, I can't justify not legalizing assisted suicide. You brought up maybe the one circumstance where it wouldn't be okay, and I had honestly never thought of it before, so, thank you.

OT: That's really terrible. I don't know if dementia is hereditary, but it can't help that it runs in your family. Has he seen a doctor about this at all?
