Headline: "Republicans are trying to ban poor people from buying meat and seafood!"

Reality: A Republican is trying to restrict EBT users from buying stuff like filet mignon and crab legs.

K. This is a non-issue, there already tons of things that you can't buy with EBT.
Where's the proof they are buying filet mignon and crab legs?

You know, the 1 guy that Fox News manages to interview.  Because millions of other people do that, apparently.

I say they can, but it should take up a lot of the allocated "food points" given.

Be king for a day if they wish, but endure weeks of canned beans and rain water afterwards.

Because keeping minimum wage up with the cost of living increases is such a retarded idea...

Wrong.

The minimum wage (in America) is at the same point as it was in the 1960's while the cost of living has skyrocketed. This in turn causes more people to be on welfare, more crime, more desperation, less hope (which means not preparing for or caring about the future), resulting in a weaker country.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that those living on minimum wage shouldn't be taxed. Unless there are several people in the family working minimum wage, in which case the tax should be 5% max.
I hope you enjoy the fact that I always love gobbling up your social critique of the US. :)

Minimum wage is already in the lowest tax bracket. For example, I pay 12% tax. That's for a full year; if I averaged 20 hours a week vs 30, I wouldn't pay anything in tax.

No shit. Really?

Thanks for the condescending response, it is a very important part of the discussion. I'm saying that minimum wage works already pay the lowest amount of tax possible, and have the potential to pay absolutely no federal tax.

And you should be able to work 40 hours a week without paying any taxes if you live by yourself.
Sure, that would be great, I love having more money. But I wouldn't go as far as to say that there isn't anything that is eased on minimum wage. Even if you work 40 hours a week, you still only pay 13%.

We can't claim that taxes are too high while simultaneously complaining about the government's debt. Taxes are their sources of revenue, and taxes are almost historically low right now.

I think you telling me that is condescending. Everybody knows that. I obviously know that, otherwise I wouldn't be fucking talking about tax brackets.
Well I'm sorry that happened. It is worth bringing up, however, considering that my argument is that minimum is already paying less relative to every other rate.

I know this. But it's still not enough.
Minimum wage doesn't make a lot, yes. But would being paid $7.50 instead of $7.25 (the federal minimum wage) really be a big enough jump to justify losing that deduction you want?

We can agree on that. To be honest, I'd rather minimum wage not be a thing. A lot of places that support it offer "competitive wages"; I'd like to see a system in place where they have to act on those words.

There's literally no reason that the US should pay back its debt. Ever. Like, the US has zero incentive to give a single shit about that debt.

That..doesn't really clear anything up. Would paying off a good portion of our debt not have a significant benefit?

Say we scrap the minimum wage, there's a huge risk of employees being abusedand not being given a fair wage. Unless they put a system in place to make sure that doesn't happen.
Honestly, I see companies still sticking to the "minimum wage" even if it ceased to exist. The only difference is that "at least you're getting paid the minimum" wouldn't be an argument anymore; if they can't fall back on the default, it would increase the likeliness of companies working to give the best price for the work.

Excuse me if it isn't a perfect analogy, but I'd compare it to gas prices between two rival gas stations. Each one tries to undercut the other, even if it's by a fraction of a cent. Even still, it promotes competitive pricing which works out well for the consumer (or employee, in the real case).

It has no impact on the country's economy in such a way that actually hinders growth and prosperity. America can have a strong economy and steep debt.
So I have just fallen victim to the red herring of being worried about the debt, is all?

Pretty much. Folks are all spazzing out at the debt from fear mongering politicians (mostly republicans) and there's just isn't that much to be worrying about.
Makes sense.

I guess that leads me to the question of why bothering with a budget at all if there's no cons to running up the debt.

Historically the debt has spiked during times of war (like now) and then lowers during times peace or less military involvement.
