People talk big about the police state, yet having a non-civilian agency enforce civilian laws is what a police state is. It's like the CIA conducting domestic spying, that's not their job; their job is foreign intelligence. It's also like a non-arresting authority, again the CIA, conducting an arrest

Police really need to learn more skills mainly communication skills. More importantly how to destress a situation.

I know this may sound stupid but i have been impressed on how the cops in calgary operate. Honestly more training for cops and more oversight can solve alot of issues. No need to train them how to fight but how to discuss and calm down a situation. The gun for the police must be the last thing they draw even when the situation is tense.

I disagree. Have you seen what a warzone is like. Ferguson is nothing compared to a real war zone. If they believe it is a war zone then cordone it off and bring about martial law. Stop putting inexperience idiots in charge. Hell in Canada martial law was brought to solve the Montreal crisis with its Quebec terrorists

When you have people burning down a city, shooting wildly at cops, and raiding stores I would hope the police have whatever means necessary to keep the peace. I agree having a militarized police force is not ideal, but we don't live in an ideal world.

I'd rather have the equipment and not need it than need it and not have it.

I heard a military vet compare these officers to soldiers about to be deployed into a combat scenario for the first time. They're all itching to try out their cool toys given to them by the feds, and have an "us vs them" mentality hardwired in their brains that lets them desensitize themselves from the opposition (in this case the very people they're supposed to protect and serve).
