Materialism and idealism are two opposing existentialist philosophies that deal with our perception--specifically, how we perceive the outside world.

Materialists believe that there is a physical, tangible universe outside of our perception. In other words, even if we didn't exist to perceive it, the universe would still be around. If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, it still makes a sound. This is backed up by basic scientific principles, such as Newton's laws of motion.

Idealism, in this context, is synonymous with solipsism--the belief that nothing actually exists outside of your perception. If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, idealists believe that no sound is made. This belief is backed up by farts and dogshit.

Because you could have an opinion on it, if only you explained the terms. People think about these concepts all the time, but not everybody is familiar with the terms ascribed to them by philosophers.

If you don't know the terms, you likely haven't discussed the idea.

Fact is, if I didn't explain what the terms were, you would have had at least three people asking what the fuck you were talking about it (even though it's philosophy 101).
