If he did that, he was clearly blinded with rage, and did that out of reaction. I highly doubt he'd suddenly just stop and check her pulse or see if she was breathing when he's already seeing red, and then leave. Odds are he choked her out and that was that.
Is it unreasonable to think that he checked to see she was breathing, propped her up in case she puked and left before she expired?
Either way, there was no intent to murder or even cause serious harm from what's given.
