I keep hearing about violent crime dropping, but the 5oclock news tells me otherwise.

But nah, it makes sense and it's been that way for a while. Hunters have various calibers for different game, enthusiasts collect all sorts of firearms, and the general dude on the street might own a handgun for defensive carry and that's it.

This is an example of drastically misleading averages. "The average gun owner owns 8 guns" seems to imply that if we gathered 10 gun owners in a room, most would own 8 guns. In reality, just shy of half would own one to two, while most in the room would own three, and one would own a very high number of guns (as the article categorizes: 8-140).

Gun control actually disproportionately affects blacks and Hispanics, as they are more likely to be impoverished and thus affected by the price hikes that extra regulations and taxes and fees can impart on to the cost of firearm ownership.

Well to-do white liberals who support a lot of gun control measures do so to keep poor people away from guns while they can still enjoy the occasional trap or target shooting outing.

I'm actually going to have to correct myself on this, but I promise it's not my fault. Just yesterday, the FBI published its crime report for 2015. For the first time in years, violent crime rose a not unsignificant amount in 2015 compared to the year before. It's still lower than what it was a few years back, but violent crime and murder rates are once again on the rise in the US. And as far as I'm aware, 2016 is shaping up to be even worse.

well, one year shouldn't quite call for the death of a statistical trend, but that's still interesting to see confirmed.
The sad part about this though is that it's really hard for me to read parts like

But of course they can't do that because then they'd just be some kind of Uncle Tom."
