Apparently, this guy's attack wasn't quite as spontaneous as I had previously thought.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-32582704

But that's now replaced with the point that this guy was previously on a terror watchlist and had previously attempted to go over to Somalia to likely join al-Shabaab (al-Qaeda affiliate in Somalia).

So why the fuck was a terror suspect allowed to have any sort of guns, let alone assault rifles? Even if he were keeping them illegally in his apartment, why was there no investigation towards that? I don't get it.

Regardless of your opinions, what this article does show is that counter-terrorism is a bitch.

But of course clamping down on guns in Texas would cause a media outrage there even if it were against a guy who tried to join al-Shabaab.

If he was on a terror watchlist he was more than likely not legally able to own one. I can't think of any reason a person not allowed to go to a certain region is allowed to own guns. It seems like a really obvious thing that nobody would overlook.

Also, if they were actual assault rifles (select-fire weapons), and not just semi-automatic rifles with a dash of propaganda mixed in, there is absolutely no way they were legally obtained.

I would be willing to bet a significant amount of money that the man never owned an assault rifle in his life. To know if he had obtained the weapons legally we would need to know the date of purchase, the date he became watched and would probably fail a background check, and Texas firearm purchasing law.
I know none of these things.

Again, I really doubt these were assault rifles. They are extremely difficult to obtain legally and the cost means they are only accessible to the richest of douchebags who treat them like classic cars.
Or, y'know. Any weapons in general...

Because people can end up on watchlists for all kinds of stupid reasons. Anti-war activists have been put on no-fly lists. You cannot deprive a person of a natural right for something they are merely suspected of.

If this guy did legally obtain guns, and the organization supposed to be monitoring him did not begin taking steps to prevent them from being used, the blood is on their hands.
Where did you get that from? Infowars.com?

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are

I think that would make someone slightly more than suspect. If actively attempting to join these groups does not constitute a crime what's the fucking point of monitoring them? Just wait for them to fuck somebody's shit up?
That's the problem. They were just sitting there and monitoring him rather than taking action about it.
