Quote
In a 12-3 vote, the council approved the rise for hotels with more than 300 rooms on 1 July 2015 and for hotels with more than 150 rooms a year later.

The new wage floor would be one of the highest in the US.

It was opposed by the hotel industry, which said it would force worker redundancies. Mayor Eric Garcetti has said he will sign the bill into law.

Under the measure passed on Wednesday, the minimum could be temporarily waived for hotels facing bankruptcy or imminent closure. Hotels with unionised workers could also be exempt if minimum wages are defined in collective bargaining agreements.

It is unclear how many workers the rise will affect. An earlier study, based on a threshold of 125 rooms, estimated the number at 13,000 employees, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

Because the vote was not unanimous, the council will take a second vote next week in order to pass it formally.

Go ahead, start crying.

Why?
Because LA has a really high cost of living, perhaps...

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
I wonder how much that'll slow employment growth, if not cause downright job losses.

Considering it's only large hotels, probably none.

You'd be surprised.

It's doubtful that one cleaning lady, even working at full capacity, could accrue >$15 of wealth for the hotel each hour for her work.  Wages are set based on how much value you're adding to the business.  Expect job cuts and little to no employment growth.  Before this hike you could hire two workers for $18/hr.  Now that costs 60% more.

"I've been battling with the struggle of love and anger and the anger has won. It's impossible for me to go back to the way I was. I've tried changing back but it didn't work. I still had it in me and doubt it will ever go away. I have no control over it anymore. It has become part of me."
This will either drive prices up or jobs down

Possibly both

That's not true.

Inflation is, always and everywhere, a monetary phenomenon.

I guess you're right.

Still, they're going to try to make up for this somewhere.
