Cause it definitely was not about stopping Iran's behavior. This deals job was to stop Iran from getting a Nuclear weapon and gain intel on their capabilities. Plus a way to delay any chance of them acquiring a nuclear weapon which honest to god they would have gotten even with the sanctions, and faster if the deal was not made.

Hell if the sanctions or any deal was not brought forward the Iranians would have likely shortened their breakout time for a warhead. Which with this deal lengthens it. Imagine one day they do not and the next day they do.

Second advantage is that it heavily effects the Iranian Internal politics and has forced the Ayatollah to bless the team that is in effect undermining his rule. Hell the Republican guards and the inner state want this deal to work. Remember they are pragmatic and have their own power that can rival the Ayatollah.

So what's the most likely course of action when Iran inevitably gets caught violating terms of the nuclear deal?  Sanctions out the ass?

And then they'll bitch and moan about how the U.S. is racist and hates the poor Iranian people, the U.N. will pressure President 2016 to go easier, and we'll be back where we started.

Just for a second put yourself in Iran's seat and ask yourself what the fuck is your next plan. At this stage of politics, through all the rhetoric and slandering and bullshit lies each side spews, most actions are heavily thought out. Rationalist rule at this level.

So what do we have Iran has a strong interest in self preservation after what they have built so far with all these sanctions. Second thing they have is that nuclear weapons is not their focus in this conflict hell not getting it and abiding by the rules allows them to make moves in other theaters. Most notably Iraq and Syria. They need to get things running over there, cause at this point this is a make or break scenario for their whole foreign policy. Remember Iran's greatest strength is not Nuclear weapons, but it's ability to create armies such as the Hezbollah. These groups have been successful in gaining wide support among the population, most notably Hezbollah with funnily enough strong support from not only the Shia's but the Christians and some Sunni groups.

They are trying to achieve the same thing in Iraq, with groups such as the Ktaib Hezbollah (Iraqi Hezbollah). And in Syria they are trying to get Assad back in power. Their focus is not Isreal anyway, their biggest enemy is Saudi Arabia. Isreal is just scared that Iran will soon balance out the power within the Middle East, and thus they will have little sway over the region. Plus their biggest focus will, if you look at it through the eyes of Civ player, getting their Science and Economy going. Cause that is going to be the main focus of their success. For them as long as they are allowed back into the World they will be happy, cause it allows them to maneuver more easily.

Nuclear weapons is not that beneficial to them, as long as no one tries to start a war within their borders they will follow it. Hell following it keep the Isreali's from actually invading or sending air strikes like before. So now if anyone says they are building one they can just call the inspectors over.

On a second point if this deal was not made what do you expect to happen. Iran not get a nuclear weapon. That is the biggest joke out there, cause they would. And it is quite easy to detect nuclear testing, which likely need to be done if they plan on using it.

This deal's main success is delaying any nuclear weapon and if they did try everyone would know. Just so you know if the US do not support it, it will sideline the US in international politics cause the rest of the countries will ignore the US and go ahead with the deal.
