Do you think there should be 3 pilots in a cockpit?

The Rage....
Following the tragedy of the plane crashing into a mountain, people are starting to wonder if a third pilot is needed on a plane. To be honest, I don't think there should be a need for that, it will cause some downsides, more specifically, higher costs in plane tickets to places which will put off traveling to some people. And plus, I doubt we even have enough pilots to take a third seat in the cockpit, it can maybe lead to less flights overall. I don't know much about airline stuff, but I guess these are my only points I can think of at the moment.

What do you think?

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Nope, let's not overreact to a matter of oversight.

A depressed pilot manipulated the systems of a negligent Lufthansa. The solution is to make the systems less manipulable, and hold Lufthansa to account.

Which could be exploited by others, and would probably make it more dangerous. Cause what if the suicidal co-pilot would override what the normal co-pilot is doing and fly the plane into the ground?

I meant for the door so if it was locked from the inside it could still be opened on the outside.

That defeats the purpose of a lock.

It could just be an override that the two pilots get.

yeah but only the pilots should have access to it and be able to use it. so situations like the recent one don't happen

So we want an emergency over-ride to the manual lock that currently serves as a safety to the emergency over-ride to the electronic lock?

It doesn't have to be a pilot, but a crew member sits in the cockpit if the pilot exits it for the toilet on yank planes IIRC.

So like
Cabin - Pilot and Copilot
Pilot goes to the loo, Stewardess goes into the cockpit and waits for his return

Something like that would be a decent failsafe without any extra resources or training. What is also a little apparent is that the psych screening/evals of pilots are pretty lacking. If they step that up in response to this, that can only be a good thing <.<

Or we just put AIs in the planes and have much safer flights >_>

Why not just give the pilots their own toilet behind the pilot door?

Well, it's doable for something like an A380
Spoiler
, but this would become a hassle to design on aircraft of a similar size to the A320 featured in this event.

And it probably wouldn't be well received by the pilots themselves.

That's the current US requirement for flights. Too bad it took 150 people to die for German/European/W/E standards to change, but at least its changing.

So stewards will also need training in piloting the aircraft, self defense, and potentially psychology.

I'm fairly certain that would only require showing them how to turn on the auto pilot and/or unlock the doors. As Midget just said it's already a requirement in the US so I don't see why the EU should be ignoring this (And they no longer will be, along with China and a few other major airlines according to the bbc)

And if there are terrorists on the plane that force the pilot to use the override to get control of the cockpit?
say no? If you give them access to the cockpit you're dead anyway.

No, they should remove the cockpit doors. Christ they have been the problem for everything so far.

That or they should be able to take control of the plane from the ground. Which one day I'm sure they will be able to.
