I don't even know about most of the time, it's pretty common for them to release games with mature elements in them. Granted not all of those titles have made their way out of Japan.

My concern is whether IS just considered it a necessary change in North America, or that they were afraid of the result if it was still included.

Another well known example would be Conkers Bad Fur Day, hell even Mother had a bunch of mature stuff in it.I get how people see Nintendo as good wholesome family entertainment though, their main franchises (mario and pokemon) are all family friendly. However they aren't afraid to delve into more mature settings for their other games. Not that I'd say something like head patting is intimate in a sexual sense.

You're likely talking about some of the S-rank quotes though.
These only come from the person you're married to and some characters are more personal than others. Most of it just really corny or cheesy romance stuff. Again it was an optional feature just like pokemon amie so it's not like you're forced to use it.
