Alrighty, so this came up in my textbook while I was skimming and I recalled reading this a few years back <.<

The question it asked in the textbook was the typical textbook 'make ya think' shit, or in simpler terms it was 'Which comes first?'

So, in your opinion are those who are depressed drawn to the internet or is it the other way around? That those who spend a lot of time online are making themselves vulnerable to depression.

There isn't a right or wrong answer, yet. However, the former strikes me as making more sense from what I've seen firsthand.

So what do you think?

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
If increased internet use is correlated with staying up late at night, then I can see how such a link could be drawn.

It's the same with being more intelligent, which makes you more likely to be a night-owl, which increases your risk of depression.

Other than that, there's only a few mundane explanations I can think of, but nothing particularly justifiable when it comes to this instance.

depressed are drawn to the internet, i'd think, and depending on what kind of community they tend to, it can make the illness better or worse (this is just based on personal experience though, i have no idea really).

Internet is just cyber humanly interactions. A depressed person, as I assume, likes to stay away from interpersonal experiences so it would be safe to say that would translate to the internet

You might find this interesting. . .or offensive, try to ignore IA's abrasive nature.

The general point I think he's trying to make(which I somewhat agree w/) is that communities(depending on the community) on the internet can contribute probably to some psychological issues, or at least exacerbate them.

I quite like IA, even if I don't entirely agree with all of the points he makes <.<

This would be what I've found as well >.>

Even if a community isn't a complete hugbox of cushions and cuddles as long as most of the users are nice people beneath any jaded/shitposty/asshole coating then it can be quiet helpful. I've seen it a few times on the flood (Here and B.net) where people rally behind and try to help those who aren't doing so well.

i've watched someone close to me slip into depression, and as far as i can tell, tumblr was a huge catalyst for that.

Ugh, yes.
I really fucking hate that site and not just because of the SJW shit. It's a toxic website. Whilst I'm sure the majority of users who use it aren't affected too badly if people are drawn into the wrong cliques there then the endless vitriol and bitchiness of the place will be taking it's toll.

Honestly, a hugbox would probably contribute as well. I mean, Jesus, just look at Tumblr.

Yeah <.<
I think that would contribute more towards the other branches of mental illness than specifically depression but it's certainly possible.

Whoops, I forgot this was about depression specifically. Sorry, I could see how certain other communities could affect depression similarly though.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
The depressed are attracted to the internet.

If you've got nothing that you want to do but don't want to be stuck with your own thoughts or notice your lack of activity (i.e. watching TV), you can go on the internet and do shit and feel at least a bit interactive.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
The depressed are drawn to the internet. They slowly reduce the amount real life interaction as they find a comfort zone on the internet.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.

That's fucking disgusting, and in some ways I'm glad IA made that video. Gangstalking, fucking hell. Was that simply thought up to tip Schizophrenics over the edge? ._.

Yup, throw in all the other bullshit and the internet is definitely no place for anyone suffering from any kind of psychological disorder.

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.
I don't think I'm qualified to diagnose myself, but I can confirm that lately as I've been feeling worse I've ended up spending more time on here and B.net.

Don't know why I'd be stressed about the site, that doesn't make any sense at all.

"Ornate chandeliers suspended from a vaulted ceiling lit the spacious chamber; Jack tilted his gaze overhead and noticed how far away they were.  His thoughts wove around those bright lights, like a dance of ether masses spiraling in precious unison. Why must we try to clutch desperately for the mere threads of this world when we can clasp onto a tapestry of untold magnificence beyond this plane of existence?"
It really depends on how the person utilizes the internet, namely, what sites and content they interact with

An hour of listening to sorrowful music on Youtube, while wallowing in self-pity (although I think music can be very therapeutic to a degree) is typically less beneficial than reading about methods to build a positive, constructive manner of thinking

I've struggled with depression when I was younger but looking back I don't see any correlation with it and the internet.
