A man would starve before he sees his son starve.
Quote from: Merry Kitsune on December 23, 2015, 07:25:03 PMIn my college Psychology class they taught that no act is selfless because you do things to benefir yourself. Sure you would surely starve before your son, but there is gratification in getting your starving son food. Therefore it isn't truly selfless because you are gaining something: satification. No, you're gaining your son surviving. You're gaining a little kid not dying in one of the worst ways possible.

Sacrificing yourself for somebody else is completely selfless.
Nope.I'm starting to realize it's people who have never committed real selfless acts that think this way.
Quote from: Verbatim on December 23, 2015, 07:29:46 PMThat's because there are no selfless acts to commit. So if I jump on a grenade, I'm being selfish?HAHAHA Wow.
That's because there are no selfless acts to commit.

To save people? There are countless soldiers who have done this. You gain NOTHING for yourself. You only save other people.
There's nothing selfless about being a vegan, since you aren't really changing anything.
I'm saying you've never committed a selfless act.
HAHAHAHA
The cause of freedom is universal. There's no different perspective. A country defending itself against invaders.Besides, I'm talking about jumping on a grenade to save other people. Not for a cause.
A man jumping on a grenade to save other people is committing a selfless act.
Except this figure is based sales. 200+ animals aren't literally let out of their cages and sent to run free.
Except people have.
Yeah I'm sure his body parts feel good.
The irony.
How is being selfish. What does he gain?
That you aren't really saving animals.
Argue about the tiniest bits of subconscious motivation and armchair philosophy that you want, but I don't give to veterans organizations (except Wounded Warrior Project, seriously, fuck that group and all of it's fraudulent and misleading ways) just to feel good about it.

Then provided that there's no malicious intents behind someone's altruistic behavior, would it really be so criminal to call it selfless?
