How would you help gun control in the U.S.

I would implement a system similar to the UK

-License to purchase a weapon that must be renewed every 5 years
-All guns must be kept in a safe when not being used
-Random checkups to ensure you're following he law
-Mandatory background checks with mental evaluations when purchasing a weapon and a license
-Ban fully automatic rifles nationwide
-Ban semi-auto rifles but bolt action rifles are fine
-Still allow handguns and shotguns
-Ban open carry
-Concealed carry is only licened to a person if they're in an emergency
-Ban private sales of firearms
-Ban handguns that have a barrel length under 4in

Full auto rifles are not needed at all, neither are semi auto rifles. Bolt action rifles should still be allowed for hunting.

If this were to be made law people that have banned guns would have to trade them in or face huge fines. Then to continue owning their legal guns they would need to apply for a weapon license and have it approved.

With this guns are still allowed in the U.S, but we're still getting a lot of guns away from people. In the long run weapons that can be purchased illegally would slowly decline in supply as less people acquire rifles. Although it would not eliminate illegal gun trade which nothing probably ever will, it will still make a good impact on it by taking guns out of circulation.

And to be serious, if the citizens ever truly needed to rise up and revolt against the Government the military would be one of the first to revolt. And other countries would also intervene to help the citizens as well as the U.N.

I know it won't change, but this thread is just to throw around on what other people would do for gun control.

How does this hinder criminals except through mild inconvenience?

I like hugs and making the world a better place. That and guns. Lots and lots of guns.
Holy shit, Septy. None of that would work at all. There is so much wrong with this post. I don't even want to get into it. It is just so unrealistic. So freaking unrealistic. As for my opinion, I think educating children at a young age on the basics of firearm safety and the potential danger that guns pose would do use some good. It would cut down on the accidental deaths. I think I'll just sit back and watch this thread burn.

Because criminals won't be able to purchase guns like they can now. In the long run it would be harder for them to illegally buy rifles as they slowly fall out of circulation.

Literally none of this impacts which guns can be bought or even how easily. It just means they have to buy a safe and have a background check, which is very common already.

Three thousand children die annually in pool related accidents at home

I really think pool control is the more important issue on our plate right now.

It's not law on a federal level. And it's not common at all, many states don't have this. Also more thorough background checks should be made.

I think it would be a total waste of time to try and address guns themselves but to look at the reason why people go columbine instead.

I'd start by kicking seven shades of shite out of the media for making them into demonic martyrs and giving their every breath wall to wall coverage for weeks after they are brought down.

Then I'd say a proper national mental healthcare system, that was free to access[/u] would resolve any remaining problems with the folks who go postal. You won't stop them all from doing it, but if you give them zero coverage when they do and make sure they get the help they need before they get to that point you should drastically cut down on the amount of shit that goes on.

I do not support gun control, because I believe every mentally mature adult deserves the right to own a gun if they wish to.

However, in saying that they need to have a mental health screening before selling them a gun. Although, that brings up the issue of buying guns as gifts for others.

I think if you own a gun you should have some form of ID proving good mental health, the make and model of gun(s) owned, and it should have to be renewed/retested every 5 years or so.

But let's be realistic this is America we're talking about.

As a few people have said, more background checks. At this point you can't really ban automatic rifles since plenty of people already have them already, so just make sure that people have a sane state of mind before getting their hands on a gun.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
Not knowing any gun-culture, nor having much exposure to guns, so bear with me here.

-Psychological checks and training for first-time buyers, with recurring pysch. checks every 5-10 years. Succesful applicants recieve a "gun-card" to prove their mental capacity and respect for weapons.

-Cooldown period between purchase and having the gun in your posession. Nothing larger than a week, though this would be on top of any time needed for a psych. check.

-To enforce the above, sale and purchase of guns would be through licensed and vetted dealers only, who would request your gun card before a purchase can be accepted. To remove guns from the market, sale of guns to said dealers would be simple, appropriate money given for the gun and no questions asked, regardless of having a gun card or legality of the gun being sold. Trade-ins would still require a valid card however.

-Limit on how many guns you can own, by category and caliber. 1 pistol, shotgun(pump-action/double-barrel), rifle (bolt-action) per person. You could get a Deagle .50 no problem, but don't expect any caliber for your other guns past .22/(whatever gauge shot is small, 20ga+ or something). This would be more strict in densely populated areas and more lenient in the vast emptinesses of Alaska where guns are more for personal defense from wild animals than wild people. Collectors can have more guns, but any amount above the allowed amount have to be decomissioned.

-Bullet/shot types are limited to the basics, no hollow points, armour piercing, "dragons breath" and the like. Non-lethal rounds are free from this, i.e. plastic/rubber bullets, rock-salt and pouch shots, etc.

-Straight-up ban of anything automatic and semi automatic (barring pistols)

None of these are perfect and won't stop gun crime outright, but I'm pretty sure it would reduce it.

passing of a theoretical and practical test,
But flee, the courts would find that no different than a voting test. It's blatantly racist and only serves to stop underprivileged minorities from getting a handgun.

You're going to need a national registry for this to work, which is explicitly made illegal by the FOPA '86.

One rifle per person? So I have to shoot small game with the 7mm or 30.06 I'd have for deer and not a .22lr like a sane person?

Why are we leaving semi-auto pistols alone? They're far more prevalent and used in shootings more than  semi-automatic rifles.
