Except they require college degrees in order for an officer to get promoted

Exactly, they don't hire smart people. College means nothing. (You're right about gun control not working, though)
College does actually

are against gun control,
So a cop that arrested somebody for attempted murder is against the thing which is helping to prevent this person they arrested from getting a gun which may be used in another crime?
Criminals already get guns illegally.
So instead of having a few criminals being able to get guns we should go to a system that allows all criminals to be able to get guns easier? While we're at it should we email sex offenders the addresses of children since a few already know where they live?

All gun control is effect citizens that have done no wrong.
So why shouldn't we have more effective background checks to help prevent mentally ill people or very aggressive people from owning guns?

First off, not all cops get promoted.  So only a few move up.

second
Correlation=/=causation

Those links just show smart people go to college, not college makes people smarter.  Everything at the bottom half of the list in your second link is an average iq.

Where did I say criminals should get guns easier? Really, if your argument is over something I never said then there's no argument here

We already do have effective background checks.

1. Fill out federal paper
2. Perform a background check through a national database
3. Get results back

It's simple and effective, something the government doesn't do enough of. Why make something more complicated than it already is when the only thing your stopping is a person wanting to defend themselves but now have to wait days?

But in order to get promoted, one needs higher education. On top of that, police departments will hire somebody with a degree over somebody who doesn't

Exactly. A person that has low IQ and is not smart won't have a college degree. Police departments look for people with college degrees. That means cops=smart, educated people

And the average American IQ is 98. So effectively the bottom half of the list is still above the average IQ level

Almost all of those majors have nothing to do with law enforcement.  Having a 4 year degree in architecture won't make you a better cop.  Majors are specializations in a field, so unless they study other things outside of their major, they are dumb in the other fields.

Most people who have degrees aren't going to bother being cops.  Most cops do not have degrees as it not a requirement.  Sure if a college grad and a high school grad both applied the college grad might get the job, but the % of college grads applying to be cops is dwarfed by the number of high school grads.

Majority of the people on that list went to college so they didn't have to do the labor and bs police do.  No one got a degree in agriculture, philosophy, or physics to be a cop.

As for the iq thing, it doesn't show the parameters of the test.  Did they include mentally challenged people and immigrants?

College doesn't mean shit. I've known more senior NCO's that would handle our battalion better than most of the officers I've met.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/05/20/only-27-percent-of-college-grads-have-a-job-related-to-their-major/

What you said relates to all jobs essentially. People rarely ever get a job in the field they studied in. Banks hire history majors because of skills relating to analyzing. Police departments will hire people that major in social work and business management since both are skills departments utilize

Out of a survery conducted by the FBI, 88% of cops responded of having a college degree. States like Minnesota also require officers to have a college degree

Your first link excludes graduate degrees (doctors, lawyers, professors, ect).

In Minnesota 88% had a degree, a state that requires a 2 year degree.
