It wasn't so much battling the monolithic communist enemy as it was waiting for it to wither and die, needlessly killing hundreds of thousands of drafted American kids in the meantime. This is coming from a guy who supported action in Kosovo and Iraq.
But that's exactly what the Policy of Containment did. Had we allowed the Soviet Union to expand that would have allowed them to survive longer. Communism has to grow to survive.

Communism, at least in countries like Viet Nam, was actually Nationalism in disguise but we failed to see that with our Red Detecting Goggles on.
