Not only do we have railguns and exo-style suits being made, but now laser weapons have made a first appearance. Fucking sick

What I'd like to make at some point is a laser pistol, something around 5-7 watts or higher if it's manageable. The model would be built in something like a nintendo zapper so I could carry it around... Within reason.
Just be that person with a laser gun. They're good for taking out security cameras, I imagine.

it was designed to take out optical equipment on enemy spacecraft, but i imagine it was capable of harming humans

I was trying to find the caliber laser used... But considering the efficiency of power focus back then I'm not sure if they'd be able to harm other satellites (it's probably under 20%).

Is this type of weaponry really necessary?
Well it does cost a $1 to fire it, so there's some cost efficiency when compared to conventional explosives

And how much did it cost to invent, test, and build?

An $11 million contract was made to develop the product

I can think of better uses for $11 million (Which, is likely underreported).

You have the advantage of a lightspeed weapon, accuracy in targeting, and the potential for a lot of destruction.
The first model of anything is usually expensive, especially considering it's new technology and it isn't mass produced.
Your questions are still important to consider... Hold on a bit

Edit: nvm, someone else found the answer

Possibly, but this innovation that's not only creating new jobs but new technologies. People were opposed to the military investing in aircraft, but look how it has transformed society

And $11 million could be put towards fixing basic infrastructure in America, something that is desperately needed and actually has an impact on our daily lives.

Aircraft in the Military has led to improvements in civilian aviation as well.

A laser weapon will not.

They might have applications in medical fields, like surgery. lasers are used today to make incisions, and with the precision tech used to track objects in the military, we might get closer to more prolific laser surgeries, things doctors may be incapable of doing or that in poorer countries don't have skilled staff for. There are possible civilian uses.

Lasers are everywhere, man. One odd innovation in weaponry can be re-purposed for industrial or medical use.

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are
I want a laser pistol that recharges its ammo.

And the DoD doesn't't have authority over infrastructure. This money came from the DoD budget. Would you rather have the military to produce unwanted tanks, or invest in future technology that will expand d New industries

As pointed out, this can have great uses in the medical fields because of the amount of precision being used, which can help save lives. It can also be used in airports as a way to detect explosive materials

I'd rather the military not even get the money, and have it be put elsewhere, where it's needed.

Holy crap, are those explosions a result of the laser, or is it hitting explosive targets?

Also, now Halo is going to get retconned more so humans "always" had laser weaponry. They did it with railguns, they'll do it with this. Obviously the Spartan Laser is the pinnacle of human laser tech, but still.

I think it's hitting explosive targets. But there always has to be a first step for everything

In a period of less than half a century, planes went from being crude machines to being powered by jet engines. Just 50 ears ago, the first laser was created and now it has been utilized as a weapon. I can see in another 100 years lasers being commonly used for warfare and civilian purposes

Yes.

Why?
because it kicks ass

Seriously though, being able to take out a cruise missile instantaneously from miles away sounds worthwhile.
