Where does everyone stand on this issue? With the current political climate, the US may as well be a one party system if either DC or Puerto Rico were to gain statehood. How exactly would the government go about accepting them as US states without royally fucking up the political balance?
A wholly Spanish-speaking region should not have statehood.

English is not an official language, but it is THE common tongue in this country. Any region given the level of power that comes with statehood should either be primarily English-speaking, or should make English fluency a component of public education (this may be the case in Puerto Rico, I don't know).
