That red is caused by iron oxide isnt it?
We aren't sure, I guess. The article said it was "Mysteriously" red, I think.

That's what it is on mars, so I imagine it's a similar siutation here.

Oops, I obviously didn't read the article thoroughly, it explains the red coloring, and it's surprisingly not related to iron oxide at all!

"Scientists believe the tholin particles form high in the atmosphere, where ultraviolet sunlight breaks apart and ionizes nitrogen and methane molecules and allows them to react with one another to form more and more complex negatively and positively charged ions. When they recombine, they form very complex macromolecules, a process first found to occur in the upper atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan. The more complex molecules continue to combine and grow until they become small particles; volatile gases condense and coat their surfaces with ice frost before they have time to fall through the atmosphere to the surface, where they add to Pluto’s red coloring."

The tholin falling down is the phenomena seen in the images depicting the blue have around the planet. It's responsible for both the blue coloring, and the red surface. Interesting.

Interesting. I'm looking forward to having full maps of pluto like we do Earth, Luna and Mars. Especially once the IAU decides on the official names for regions.

As interesting as NASA's work tends to be, does anyone else question the amount of good it does for us compared to the value we might find in investing in things like bioengineering research? Of course, this might not have been the case in the past, but I wonder if we've extracted most of the direct technological progress from space travel that we can. There are problems that remain to be solved, of course, but I wonder if there aren't more lucrative opportunities we could address now.

It's difficult to see the benefit of launching billions of dollars worth of technology into space, never to be recovered, but here are some technological advancements that we can attribute to NASA:

https://spinoff.nasa.gov/Spinoff2008/tech_benefits.html

In addition, almost every major advancement in computing has been strongly funded by NASA for use in mission equipment, such as microprocessors. Space exploration is arguably the second highest source of technological expansion, the first being war.

Absolutely not. Space travel is one of the biggest contributors to science and technology as it forces us to try and make everything as powerful as possible while keeping averything as small as possible.

And besides, space travel is the only way to ensure survival of the human race with some tangible meaning. Because there's really not much to do right now if some big space rock comes to  play.
