What do I have to fear if I have nothing to hide?

I thought of government spying and shit when I read the title, so I'll base my post off of that.

While I have nothing to hide, I feel it is the simple principle of which our country was founded on, that the government shouldn't be snooping in literally every hidey hole in fear of terrorism or the works.

How much freedom are we willing to sacrifice to honestly stay safe against those "threats"? You have a far better chance of getting shot by a normal citizen, or simply dying from a freak accident, then dying from any terrorist the media has you think is threatening everyone.

I feel like a massive tool for saying "media" and all that, but yeah.

Fair point--not too many people use the "on principle" argument, and I find it reasonable. The only issue I take with it is merely that I have no personal use for my privacy.

It's like taking away my right to eat meat, or something.
Or, more aptly, taking away my right to visit a planet that's a million light years away.

It's like, yeah, I should have the right to those things, I guess, but...
I'll never take advantage of them.

I can understand that, but at the same time I think since it was founded upon that value of freedom (and no I'm not one of the crazies who thinks our government will kills us all), we should cherish it and hold onto it. It's like the freedom of religion. I'm not really religious at all, so if it was altered someway, it literally wouldn't effect me. But I still think it should be how it is because of the values it represents.

Maybe a wrong analogy, but I'm too lazy to really think of another.

I neither fear, nor despise.
Perhaps because putting everything out there frightens others, and they may react in a rather unpleasant manner?

You shouldn't live in fear, sure. But I guess be mindful?
