Does a cold, lonely, godless universe mean that everything is meaningless?

Spoiler
>.> so after thinking for a while about things that were said in my previous thread, I'm left with more questions than answers.

I used to think philosophy was a bit pointless until I realized how I use it every day. And I never actually thought of "what is 'truth'" before...

Speaking of things I've never really thought about, I realized I never took the time to think about atheism and how I've always thought it pretty much required nihilism. I have this weird conflict where even though I'm a moral nihilist, I still have my own ideas of what's right and wrong. The latter seems arbitrary and baseless in the face of the former and I have no freakin' idea how to reconcile that. TF2 Scout best class

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
This actually ties quite nicely in with Verbatim's point about things being "subjectively objective".

You should check out Nietzsche and other existentialists; the basic position is that humans create value.

Well, everything is inherently meaningless, but that doesn't mean life has no meaning. Life's meaning is just whatever you assign to it. For me, for example, it would be happiness.

So no, atheism doesn't necessitate nihilism.

We make our own meanings and values. Some find some sort of solace in it all being pointless, but I just think they're being over dramatic.

Without a deity, value is intrinsic to the human experience. If you don't derive meaning from your own life, then nihilism seems like a perfectly valid viewpoint. But then it's not even really a worldview, is it? It's just the denial of all others.

I defer to Walter Sobchak's opinion of nihilism: "Say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos."

No. You're making some pretty egregious assumptions of who an atheist is.
