Children don't exactly have a choice when it comes to being with their parents or not. When you spank them you're putting them in a situation where they have no where to run to for comfort. Not to mention that you're teaching them that a person's sins should almost always be punished with violence.

I'm 20 years old and I still remember the three times I got spanked. In the end I turned out fine, but a lot of kids don't.

Should the kids be taken away from their parents? Hell no. But I can see why some people might think that.

It depends on the severity of the punishment, some parents take it too far, but spanking alone, just once maybe twice after, is sufficient. Though I for one wouldn't do it too my child.

I don't think so, though pulling hair seems a bit OTT.

But it depends on the child if disciplining them in that way works or not. I never needed it nor received it, and I've always been generally a good person. My brother has been spanked by my Dad several times for acting out and having tantrums when he didn't get his way and broke things in anger, and despite that he's still a shit when he wants to be now that's he's grown up a little bit.

If your talking about a light smack for being bad then no, however define a smack.

That was the issue here in the UK at least, some parents "smacks" were punches and kicks. Also does any one remember Baby P? Those bastards broke the poor childs back because he couldn't stop crying one night.

frack no, and anyone who DOES is an idiot who honestly has no idea what they're talking about. Idiots who think a disciplinary smack is abuse are saying they know the god damn difference between a smack once in a blue moon and a punch to the face and belt to the stomach every day.

This is one of the biggest reasons I like Canada, they allow you to parent your fracking kids and correct them when they are wrong. A smack across the top of your head teaches you that your god damn actions have a consequence, and doing extremely stupid shit like running into traffic will get you hurt.

I wouldn't necessarily label it as abuse per se, but it's definitely not beneficial to the upbringing of the child.

When my parents resorted to smacking, it didn't instill me with good morals or taught me to behave accordingly. It just made me fear them even more, and taught me to be extra sneaky whenever I felt like misbehaving. A rare skelp across the head every once in a blue moon conveys the message that they really did step out of line sure, but if you overdo it, the child just becomes accustomed and learns how to avoid getting caught, instead of learning to not misbehave.

Corporal punishment still has a place, but shouldn't be the first resort. Verbal should be used lightly and once, if it fails, then put the smack down!.. Otherwise.. you are letting the child know they can do it twice before they should stop. <—- I can tell which kids are like that from the school I work at.

Half of the punishment that was given to me was verbal with guilt trip intentions. I guess you could call it "Verbal abuse" when it wasn't used correctly.

Telling me that if I don't pick up my room, I'm white, scum bag trash, usually worked like a charm. My mom used verbal punishment correctly.

My father used it incorrectly: Threatening to break your child's neck (In a serious, yelling manner) over a detention isn't the correct use of verbal punishment. That memory still flashes in my mind when this subject comes up. The effect behind this is I have a very distant, isolated away from relationship from my father.

Past the age of eight, spanking shouldn't be used as a punishment. At that point, you should really be transitioning to other punishments.
