Is making someone sad a crime? No? Then suicide shouldn't be, either.

making someone sad =/= the serious emotional trauma that comes with somebody close to you attempting to snuff themselves out.

If I have someone that I cared for dearly try to kill themselves I'd first see if I could help them. If that fails, I wouldn't stop them from doing what they want/need to in order to ease the pain. As long as they don't drag someone else into it (Murder/Suicide is just as evil as just plain murder if the other person didn't want to die)

Ah yes, what better way to counsel a stressed depressed suicidal than to give them the stress of a trial...that 'oughta work.

It doesn't make sense why this is a crime. If it brings psychological trauma to those around them, why don't other crimes factor this? I've no idea how long this law has been in place, but compare it now that domestic abuse laws are only starting to try and accommodate for psychological abuse as well.

Perhaps we should just go back to the 18th Century punishment for Attempted Suicide; hanging. Oh the sick irony.

Yeah, it shouldn't be a crime. It's a condition that needs to be treated.

It's the same thing with drug related things, pedophiles or child porn buyers/downloaders. For the CP thing it should only by a crime if you're involved in making it.If you're the person that buys it you shouldn't get arrested for it if you're caught with it. Pedophilia is nothing more than a mental condition.To me there would be a lot more pedo's and drug users getting help if their problem isn't considered a crime. Lets say you're a pedo and you know it. Would you really want to get help for it when you know your problem can be a serious crime and it's greatly looked down upon? All of these issues tie into poor understanding. I was one of those guys who used to think "all pedos should get the death penalty" or "anorexic people are pathetic, why would you ever do that to yourself", etc.

However, I had someone close to me (have, it's still going on) go through serious mental problems, and it's a huge eye opener.

Anyone dealing with mental issues like suicidal thoughts or actions require support. Yelling at them, being impatient, or punishing them is far from okay. Each mental issue is unique and in the case of mental issues that affect others the justice system needs modernization. Honestly, it needs more than modernization. This issue is kept relatively quite compared to current issues like gay marriage, but it's just as important.

Matter of technicality, it's not for damaging government property (that's a joke that's widely believed as fact), but for failing to take precautions to prevent damage to yourself (ie: using sunscreen, watching exposure to sun, etc...), and in the event of the sunburn being severe enough to prevent you from doing your job, the paperwork may be as severe as an article 15.


Additionally, attempted suicide is not a crime in the US as many believe. If the cops find you after/during a failed attempt then they are obligated to bring you to medical professionals who (if they believe your mental state is unsafe) may commit you to the hospital against your will.  However... endanger anyone else in your attempt, and it becomes a criminal matter.

Yes, and it should be punishable by death.
