Hell, he still thinks gang members don't commit crime and go to prison to get more recognition and power in their group despite my through knowledge they do. Gangs like the Hells Angels give rewards to those that commit crimes, such as murder. Yet he still denies that

By the way, is there really a point for this thread anymore? We're on page 2 without a rebuttal to Flee's post, and I doubt that one will come given how off-track this thread is getting.

Humans are social creatures. We are built for community, not isolation.

Some people can handle the lack of human interaction longer than others, but the fact remains:
we can't do that forever.

Well, no. It's torture because it's torture, not because you're upsetting whoever's confined. I imagine prison upset them in the first place. It just doesn't do anything to solve any problems whatsoever, and just engenders hatred towards the established order.

Yeah I absolutely agree that it's torture. I don't agree with the way that our prisons handle criminals. I think rehabilitation is a much more logical way of dealing with criminals. Look at Norway's rate of reincarceration. They have like half the amount of prisoners being reincarcerated. I think it's because punishment is really ineffective. Punishment itself doesn't really serve a purpose but an power trip for people who are angry at the offender. People want to get back at people and that is the reason why we punish people in the first place. I think it's an extremely childish way of dealing with problems, to treat people like they are the problem itself, instead of trying to treat the underlying issues. People don't want to imagine a world where there are things beyond their control, so they try to punish people to make them feel like they're in control of them. It's really just a savage thing to do.

As for solitary confinement itself it sounds completely unethical. Being put in a room with nothing to do for days at a time. I watched a documentary one time about a person who was locked in a dark room for two years and apparently it gave him serious permanent psychological damage. I think it's an awful way to treat prisoners.

Using confinement as a punishment sparingly is okay. Sometimes people need to cool down. But no way should prisoners be sleeping in solitary confinement or spending days in it.

I couldn't imagine sitting in a small room for hour after hour after hour after hour, day after day...yeah that is torture.

That's the point.

With nothing to do and little stimulation for the brain, it turns to it's own thoughts... which I'd imagine is similar to when in the middle of the night you suddenly recall embarrassing or regretful memories, esssentially torturing yourself.

There are ways if getting around it, one G.I. who was in Vietnamese captivity for some time used his time in isolation to imagine building his dream house from scratch, and adding furniture and decirations as he went along. Obviously this doesn't work for everyone.
