Could companies sponsor a school and/or district?

I was talking with my mom [a retired teacher] about fixing schools. She proposed the idea that local businesses, both big and small, could sponsor a school or school district, depending on how much they wanted to spend.

Could this work? Is there a way to keep education objective even if it's being sponsored by an outside company?

When your schools thrive, your residents thrive, and your businesses thrive.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
I don't know why we don't just make investments in infrastructure tax-deductible.

I could get behind that.

Makes more sense, to be honest.

Local businesses probably understand the infrastructure needs of the economy directly around them better than their congressman.

Hm, why not. Plenty of local businesses support youth sports teams and everything is fine with that. Obviously it would bring in much needed money and businesses can fight for their contributions to be tax deductible

No, but the school uniform would be khakis and a polo with the company logo.

I kid.

It'd be nice if companies were more altruistic and didn't require some sort of tangible benefit from sponsorship, and instead just want to better the community that their employees and customers live and work in.

The guy who owns the local Ford, Chevy and Toyota dealerships holds a contest every year to win a free car.  Each student with perfect attendance gets their name pulled from a hat (or bucket or w/e).  The car from 2013 was a brand new Ford Mustang Convertible.  I didn't know the girl who won (she was an IB student).

What I'm getting at is that there are many local businesses and franchise owners that are willing to do things to help out local schools.  So what if it takes putting a little logo on a t-shirt?  We already have that with every other facet of our lives (seriously, logos are everywhere).

It already happens to an extent here in the UK, certainly local businesses put money into the local schools or at least organise events, competitions and extra-curricular activities. Most secondary schools are already tied to and sponsored by universities, my school is part of the Chichester University group of academies for example, and in term we are also partnered with Churcher's grammar school, who are linked to a College in London who are in turn a feeder to Oxford and Cambridge.

It's not really much of a leap from Unis and a small contingent of businesses to a more equal contribution, both parties have a vested interest in cultivating a well-educated population at Secondary school level

Feet first into fun!
My school is sponsored by local businesses and it still sucks. But that's probably just a budgeting thing with the school seeing as we have text books falling apart but all new equipment for our sports teams.

There's no profit to be made off education. It's been tried before and has failed countless times.
Yes there is, but not directly. When you invest in schools, they get a better education, get better jobs, and spend more money.

Yeah that is a neat idea. Local businesses already give most of the funds for my schools extra-curricular activities anyway.

Something I can see becoming a problem is states/districts cutting their own funding to sponsored schools, which happens in a lot of states with the lottery.

If a school district uses $10m/yr, and sponsorship brings in $5m, the state shouldn't cut $5m from their budget so it's still $10m - the district should instead be getting $15m total.

That's what happens in a lot of states where the lottery money goes to schools. States just supplement taxes for lottery funds, instead of more money going to schools.

I wrote a paper about this back in high school. It would be as simple as naming the football field of buildings like colleges do, or putting sponsors on sports uniforms like they do in Rec soccer. I think the up sides greatly outweigh any downsides. I come from the poorest school district in my state and we could use any penny we could get.

I agree.

Though I'm not sure why you'd need logos on school uniforms. I understand it for sports games and race teams and such, but the students/staff are only there among themselves, they aren't out promoting anything.

I would think that a company logo under the school sign would do fine.

Ah ok. Yeah that would make sense.
