Well if you want to tell me how I'm incorrect, I'll gladly listen. Conservatism revolves around preservation of the status quo, which conflicts with much artistic thinking. The two seem diametrically opposed, to me.

^this. typically, the quality of an artist is determined by their innovation or progression in whatever medium or genre they work with. there's also the fact that many of the most influential movements in art mostly take place in the younger generation, where progressive thinking is more prevalent.

The idea that progressivism and liberalism are the same thing is the issue. There are progressive conservatives and there are regressive liberals. The popular line about liberals being creative free-thinkers and conservatives being stodgy traditionalists is a farce that both sides espouse to the point that some conservatives use the word "progressive" as an insult and vice versa, when in truth progressivism is about advancing social welfare and morality; conservatism and liberalism explicitly refer to the degree with which the government compels society to change. Liberal progressives see the government as a primary means to enforce social change; the goverment conceives of a change and forces society to comply. Conservative progressives believe change must originate within society, rather than through government compulsion. So while it might make you feel special to tell yourself that as a liberal you're a member of America's club of creative, progressive, artistic individuals, it's really little more than dishonest rhetoric.

Gay marriage, social welfare, drug legalization, etc. Liberal/conservative describe the amount of government injected into the process of progress. I believe Meta put it something like, if progress is a highway, liberals hit the gas and get from point A to B quickly; Conservatives hit the brakes before a sharp turn. If someone describes themselves as "socially liberal" but economically conservative, they probably actually mean they're progressive conservatives. Look at examples like Teddy Roosevelt or Eisenhower; they enacted change, but with caution -- conservatively.

Probably a liberal, maybe not necessarily progressive liberal. I think people get too attached to labels, like they're a sports team or something. If anything, just say you're social conservative or economic liberal.

a good number of folk artists, custom furniture makers, custom gunsmiths and knife makers are conservative

also my grandfather is a modern sculptor and he's a conservative

other than that I don't really know besides country singers and the occasional rock and roll person
