This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Most of you probably know me now as the fairly conservative - at least economically - guy. While I agree that everybody should be sceptical of social democracy and the capacity for governments or technocrats to get things right, and that State meddling tends to be harmful, one thing is clear; capitalism can't last forever.

I'm going to post a video by CGP Grey which highlights the fundamental point here: technological growth.
YouTube

TL;DW All throughout human history, people have specialised and divided in their labour - a trend which has, since Adam Smith, been the fundamental driving force of prosperity and the creation of new technologies has accelerated the trend. As mechanical muscles replace labour, so too will mechanical minds replace mental labour.

CGP Grey introduces us to Baxter, an incredibly intelligent, general purpose robot that could potentially replace a lot of unskilled labour. Also, there's the giant network of robots coming for barristas, and this robot remembers who you are and how you like your coffee. The real technological change isn't in the expensive new stuff, but the stuff of yesteryear getting cheaper and cheaper. Mechanical minds is going to push human labour out of the economy.

As an example, the automation of transportation (on the roads, inside factories or in pit mines) is here and coming rapidly. The transportation industry also employs 3.6 million people in the U.S. alone. Worldwide, that's about 70 million jobs - minimum. The immediate reaction is to claim that this will only, largely, effect unskilled labour. Software bots could replace administrative and white-collar workers, potentially sooner as they are much less expensive and much more efficient than physical robots.

The unemployment rate during the Great Depression was 25%, the list - according to CGP Grey - of the most vulnerable jobs in the U.S. amounts to 45%.

Essentially, the question is one of what to do when massive social instability is caused by unemployment, despite the fact that we will be more resource- and technology-abundant than ever before. I don't know when this will happen, and I'm sceptical it'll happen as soon as CGP seems to imply, but I'm certain it'll at least begin within my lifetime.

Now, I don't know what to do. It's clear that capitalism simply cannot last, and I wouldn't be opposed to market socialism if it weren't for the fact that human labour will become redundant. I don't know whether a market will come along to determine the supply/demand for certain goods, nor do I know how that'd be calculated, but it's clear that humanity - at some point in time; likely soon - is going to face a technological and economic paradigm shift.

It's probably best summed up by this non-scientific, purely symbolic graph:

By January 2015, driverless cars are going to be trialed in three cities in the U.K. This sort of automation will likely not be as significant as the techno-optimists would hope, but it's significant enough and soon enough to cause worry. Whatever the outcome, it's quite clear that with technological evolution, our economic paradigm is going to be made pointless.

And I have no idea what to replace it with.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
Someone has to build the robots though. I mean, robots building robots? That's just absurd.

Can't you imagine it though?

A self sustaining robot race ;o;

Robots to mine and process materials, Robots to manufacture the components, Robots to assemble the Components and Robots to program the Newly made Robots.

My optic implants are leaking clear oil at the thought

And you folks never saw this coming? What has history shown? Empires we build eventually crumble and are replaced with something else. The law of the universe is, if it's ever happened, at some point in time, it will happen again.

But our future is one of the unknown, I can say that for sure. And, frankly, I'm rather pleased that I likely won't be alive to see it.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Society wouldn't have to work, the government would supply credits that would go toward the various activities they could do with their time. Only a small few of the most intelligent would be given a jobβ€”the reward for them being knowledge.
My concerns lie chiefly in the transitory stage between society now and society following.

Also, intelligence would be of no economic importance - nothing human would be. When the mental capacity of machines outpaces that of humans, the economy will be totally devoid of people. We will, I imagine, end up with some sort of scarcity-based gift economy.

Well, I don't know why I'm speculating. I don't know. I hope I'll get to see the results, though.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
I don't want to live in a world run by robots, there are many things wrong with this one but I like the foundations we have in this society.

If robots are able to achieve a Marxist utopia than I'd argue that they're superior to us, as we'll never be able to achieve that.

I don't understand.

Are you saying technology making capitalism obsolete means technology isn't all that great?

Never really thought about this subject.

I imagine the arts and humanities will replace STEM.  Robots can't do things like poetry, music composition, or art.

inb4 someone shows me a video of a robot writing poetry, composing music, or painting a pretty picture

By transition you mean mass lay offs and joblessness?
Yes. Alongside the inevitable contrast between rich and poor and the probable creation of an incredibly small class of uber-rich people.

I have no idea how the government is going to smoothly cope with that transition.

Partially

I'm also saying that too much dependence on technology, including robotics, will be the downfall of the human race. Just look at nearly everybody glued to their smartphones to the point they're willing to risk their lives and other lives to send a text while driving or take a damn self-shot

Not all technology is bad of course but this is one of the occurrences where I see more negative than positive

if we meld our brains with robots or become robotic in nature? Removing the necessity to eat and sleep? The need to even relax in the first place because we've found a way to mess with the chemicals/whatever that cause stress?
I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I'm really serious, though. We can not incorporate robots into our lives like that. It's a terrible idea and could very well mean the end of humanity, because I guarantee that it will go too far.

We may not be extinct, but what's the point in surviving if we meld our brains with robots or become robotic in nature? Removing the necessity to eat and sleep? The need to even relax in the first place because we've found a way to mess with the chemicals/whatever that cause stress?

We've all seen how simple ideas and concepts have become things like the atom bomb. We need to learn from our mistakes, and not lose our humanity in a blind quest for progress.

It would appear the reprogramming was ineffective...

/stupidity

Serious: I know I joke about the superiority of the machine/worship the omnissiah stuff but it's not entirely a joke. I would honestly and happily give up parts of my body in exchange for robotics/augmetics.
Removing the need for sleep? I would fucking kill to get that ability.
Removing the need for relaxation/stress though, I wouldn't. You can give up parts of your humanity without losing it entirely, the things that aren't broken don't necessarily need replacing - Like Love/Happiness/Loyalty. I would be strongly opposed to any hyper edgy twat that was willing to remove those things from their personality in favour of clinical logic.

It's just the weakest aspects of the flesh that should/could/can be someday replaced with objectively superior parts >.>

Like Eyes, fragile little orbs of jelly that you depend upon for damn near everything. Would you give them up? Fuck no. Would you replace them with robotic eyes that don't fail/go blind with glaucoma? Would you turn down the option for infrared vision?

I sure as hell would want them <.<
