Hi,

So have not been posting on here much but decided to make a post about how important is Space to the Military?

Recently a Chinese experiment on "anti-missile" technology ended up with them destroying a satellite [1]. So from this you already know where i am going. The US and the world keeps talking about how the future wars will be fought online, but what about the domain of Space. The US and the Russians have for the most part dominated this sector by placing up their satellites up for both reconnaissance and operation control. Some of us even take for granted in the public the role they play both in mobile and entertainments side.

But what could the implications of a future where satellites start to become targets in the larger scheme of things. After all one of the ways to defeat an enemy is to render it unable to effectively communicate with each other and leave it in chaotic disarray with no direction. How important then is the satellite network to a modern information based military and could the loss of them cause major impact to the systems that these armed forces rely on?

It'd probably happen in a satellite/anti-satellite context. Not gonna be starships and space battles as well.

Which does give the interesting thought of Navy SEAL or Special Forces raids on massive Chinese/Russian military space stations. The thought of that would be pure awesome.

Actually a space task force would require a whole new group seperate from Seals or special forces mainly due to the man hours required to train and how you cannot fight in both space and earth. Like two different environment where adapting takes too long.

Personally raiding is also something that would be kind of costly. For me it would be more EMP based or targeted missile based.

I dunno. I'm just throwing out thoughts. Awesome thoughts. Not that it would seriously be a practical thing though. It would be missile/EMP based...

unless they had something you wanted and didn't want damaged by an emp or missile. . .although it would be extremely impractical and the value of said thing would have to be more than the cost of the mission.

It is kind of freaky thinking about the damage you could cause by knocking out satellites. I'm sure some kind of protection will be implemented.

Don't we have an international ban on orbital based weapons platforms?
I don't see satellites having any more of a role than communications, guiding, and tracking relays.

Well, yeah i mean Satellites are important but you do not need orbital based weapons to fight in space. These include jamming communication relays and causing chaos to existing hardware that rely on gps systems.
