It gained the nickname, "Warthog" because of the lineage of Republic. Most of the aircraft that Republic produced was nicknamed, "Hog" in some way. It's true designation "Thunderbolt II" was to commemorate one of the most effective ground attack aircraft in American history, the P-47 Thunderbolt.
