The middle east really is tragic, though. They're up to their ears in oil and money but are the least progressive (social, government, technological) in the world. They ought to be bastions innovation, space exploration, medicine, education, and culture.

Wasn't the middle east a bastion of all those things at one point in history though? Why is the region now in such a sorry state? Does it have something to do with colonialism/culture/religion?

Yeah, culture.

It wasn't a golden age because of islam, but it was a golden age despite islam. Just like with the western world's christianity and science throughout history. Some things were frowned upon, and others just happened and helped society move forward. But just like with any good things, religion got the better of society and they stopped moving forward.

Nowadays we have wars and such, so the children grow up wanting to be diplomats, farmers, doctors, or anyone who can help. Nobody sits there comfortably thinking "hmm, you know, I've always dreamed about the stars", because what's happening down here is attention-grabbing enough. There's no "I wonder how food works" or w/e, they think "I wish everyone had food".
