I couldn't give to fucks about anybody or anything on this planet and the reason for that is I find everyone's intellectual intelligence to be far less superior than that of my own.

Like I've said before. The real kicker on simple living is that it's difficult to do.

It's a combination of modern day society being in every corner and the difficulties that do come with simple living.
If you know what you're doing it's not bad. It's almost fun.

The real annoyance is modern day society and technology inevitably interfering.

Unless you're willing to go full hermit, pretty much.

Although I don't have fond memories of hauling water or being eaten alive by bugs in the summer when getting firewood.
Running out of firewood and freezing in the night is a fond memory.

I get your point though. Although you know it's possible to have things you don't like while doing something you enjoy right? I won't complain about a nice fire when it's really cold, but I certainly didn't enjoy months of work out in temperatures that hit me harder than other people and getting eaten by bugs.

Finally we can have this thread without Verb coming and calling everyone a scumbag for having these beliefs.

The idea of being isolated if you have enough money to live the rest of your days alone is not a bad thing. Anyone who says otherwise needs to throw away their copy of The Leviathan; it was written by an Authoritarian hack who only saw people as either cattle or wolves. You are NOT obligated to care for your neighbor and living as detached from society as possible gives you a freedom you'll never get from them.

And saying you have to forgo the currency of the nearest society as well is intentionally being unfair and trying to punish the person for not conforming with your social rules. Boohoo, a person found a way to live on their own and not have to deal with the bullshit of contributing to whatever the nearest town wants, get over it. Under that logic, foreigners and tourists shouldn't be allowed to use the local currency either because they're also not paying taxes.

You know you don't even have to reply to him let alone even read his posts if you don't want to right? It's not like you're being forced to read them.

On that topic I can't really say that I get people posting that they're happy he can't post for the time being. Has it ever occurred to just not pay attention to the posts you don't like very much?

There's some irony there then. This isn't like having somebody follow you around in person and nag you. On the internet if you want to shut somebody up all you have to do is pay no mind.

Not good enough, I want his smugness brought down a level and ignoring him would give him an unjustified sense of winning.

At first, the idea of a central absolute government makes sense because of things such as civil war and unrest since that's the point in having one. However the book goes on to say that man in inherently violent against himself, which is absolute bullshit. And says we HAVE to be part of the social contract to keep us from killing each other; which is once again, bullshit.

You don't understand Hobbes.

Really not that surprising, since he was writing in the aftermath of the Civil War.

We are though

Humans are inherently violent, we just have the capacity to choose to behave otherwise.

The fact that we have the capacity to choose means we're not mindless beasts destined to kill each other. We don't need a supreme authority to tell us not to; having Empathy is a common thing in almost every human. When we went over the book back when I was still in college, my professor contrasted Leviathan with a book written by another individual I think a century later, I can't remember the name of it at the moment but if I do I'll mention it, but it basically was the exact opposite of Hobbe's line of thinking.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating for a one world government (although I'd join the sibyl system in a heartbeat) but humans are a violent species by default.

Look at food for example

When food is freely available, people are content. When hunger starts to set in, people get agitated. When hunger becomes insatiable, people will use violence to obtain food.

You can view it on the societal level (French revolution) or on the individual level (hambeasts).

Someday we might evolve to a point where violence isn't a preprogrammed response, but whilst we live in a technologically advanced world our bodies and brains are still only a small jump down from the trees.

Then you also have the slightly tangential thing, where the more intelligent a species becomes the more sadistic it becomes. Cats, Dolphins and Chimpanzees give humans a run for their money when it comes to violence for entertainment.

The only reason you think this is true is because you live in a society which has third-party institutions to enforce order. A society where the social contract between individuals already exists and is enforced. Lacking those institutions, yes, we are a pretty violent species. Not only because apes are naturally violent, but because we would have to be in order to defend ourselves, our properties and our reputations.

Hobbes was writing in a time when the institutional set-up to enforce order completely broke down across Great Britain. That's his point. Hobbes is actually considered an important precursor to the development of classical liberalism and human rights.

Violent against ourselves though? He lived during civil unrest yes, but there was a government in place, and he wasn't around thousands of years beforehand to see if out tribal primitive selves were killing each other sadistically. We were small wandering groups that would hunt just to survive, attacking your own people would be counterproductive. And the whole point I wanted to bring up (one that Verb refused to even entertain in the previous thread about this subject) is that just because someone disconnects himself from society, and refuses to be apart of the contract that has been put in place, does NOT make him any more dangerous to that group.

The only reason you think this is true is because you live in a society which has third-party institutions to enforce order. Ehhhhhhhh

It depends really, hunting to survive began to turn into hunting to show prowess (mate attraction/social power). If you mean your own tribe by own people, then yeah that's counterproductive but even then, for mate attraction and social standing infighting and the killing of rivals/challengers (alpha status) isn't necessarily counterproductive for the individual.

Any social hierarchy; tribes, prides, troops and groups will have internal violence for a member to establish dominance to ensure their genetic future.

And inter-group conflict was rampant in early man (and is still observable in chimps today, it's pretty disturbing watching chimpanzees going to war in a natural parody of humans), because that's over control of resources like food and water. Archeological finds make it fairly clear what tribes would do to one another, not a whole lot of speculation needed when the bones have teeth and knife marks in.
