The people who wrote the US Bill of Rights were extremely stupid to add the 2nd Amendment. The reason it was made (to combat oppressive governments) has never been invoked a single time in the history of the US. But it's done literally nothing but enable the gun murder rate in the US to exceed 30,000 a year.

That's literally enough to wipe out the town I live in (Los Gatos, California) once per year from gun deaths alone.

While I agree that more guns isn't good and am not a fan of the general US gun policy, that number is actually only 15,000.
wut

I've been led on for 3 years that the annual gun deaths here were 30k..

Gun deaths is around 33,000, which includes suicides and accidents. Gun murders, like your OP said, "only" make up half of that number.
Hm. So my statistic isn't that bad after all. Since "accidents" can include scenarios like a baby accidentally shooting himself with a gun that was left out by idiots parents which he thought was a toy. And with suicides, that's pretty straightforward.

I'm also thinking that was the whole point of that amendment. The time it was writing was a few years after the Revolutionary war. So the people that wrote it want the people to be able to declarer another war for some type of Independence and they would need weapons for it. Those weapons would be guns.

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are
Um.. why did anyone under the age of 21 have easy access to a firearm? That is my question. Horrible parenting results in a horrible ending.

Anyone who'd use this short news article to jump start more gun control debate is an obvious liberal.

I sort of thought the reason for the second amendment, at least when it was created, was as a preventative measure against tyranny and not only to fight back against it, seeing as when you're fighting against a tyrannical regime their laws don't matter too you one iota.

Eh, whatever. . .

this isn't proof that guns need to be banned, it only shows that the parents are massive fucktards for letting such young children be anywhere near a gun. What we need to do is make people more aware of gun safety and if you're going to have a gun in your household, teach the kids themselves gun safety. Also, put your damned gun rack in a place where a 6 year old can't get to it easily.

If you're too dumb to safely store a potentially dangerous weapon then you're too dumb to be spreading your genes, this kid like a responsible individual attempted to remove his parents mistakes and rid the world of the pain of further having to put up w/ his parents genetic material.

You do realize the 2nd amendment says "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Meaning they didn't intend for literally all citizens to just walk around with guns. It just somehow got twisted into that. At least that's how some interpret it. The part where it says " the right of the people to keep and bear Arms" is what causes the confusion.

The founding fathers just worded it weird.

A militia is a fighting force consisting of volunteers from civilian population. Regulated just means it should be organized, probably locally organized(certainly not by the central government, that would defeat the purpose) considering one of  a militias intended functions. In order for civilians to be able to organize themselves into a fighting force they needed  access to weapons. The founding fathers acknowledged this and decided to make this idea one of the first additions to the constitution(which you know. . .sorry).

I'm not sure whether this reasoning applies today. . .

do you really think the founding fathers wouldn't make a stalwart effort of being absolutely clear

they were composing the supreme law of the land
they wouldn't just "word something weird" like it didn't matter

The problem here is trying to make it all about the gun.

I know you're not dumb enough to think the mere presence of a firearm triggers violence, but some of these reactions make it seem like there are people that really do.

There are so many other factors at play here that you can't just isolate the implement used and blame the crime on it alone.

Obviously the background information isn't available to me so I can only speculate, but I'd wager that 90% of these "kid finds gun, people get hurt" stories come out of households where the parents thought "hurr, guns are neat and make me feel safe!" Then bought a shitty Taurus, with absolutely no time spent in gun safety courses, then left it in a drawer/purse/closet loaded. I can tell you for sure that ANY household where a kid has unsupervised access to a gun is ignoring the very basics of gun safety. The parents are 100% responsible for these incidents, but I'm positive that if these people had any background in firearm safety, these things would almost never happen.

Then you have school/mass shooters, who are invariably mentally ill or terrorists. Disabled people having access to guns is, again, a failing on the part of their peers and guardians, and good luck preventing terrorism from happening.

Just reacting to all of these incidents with "Obviously GUNS are the problem" demonstrates a serious lack of understanding.
You're totally right, but we can't even have THAT conversation. No conversation about gun safety or access to firearms by mentally ill people is allowed to occur.

Even if it were to happen, it's not like civilians have the firepower to stand up to the US military. Good luck using your handy shotgun against tanks, helicopters, and drones.
